Members asdfjkl semi
Hey guys my brother is almost 20 and his birthday is coming up in a little over a week. He's good at just about every instrument he picks up, and these days he's been busy as the drummer for a cover band. I'm giving him a custom guitar as a present, but my mom doesn't know what get to get him. I was thinking something drum-related but I don't know drums, so I don't know what that'd be. Her budget is anywhere between $75 and $200. Any suggestions?

Members asdfjkl semi
A girl friend with a job, car & appartment! Haha, I could sign him up for e-Harmony, I guess There's a lot. A few thoughts include: A throne, that's a great idea! Last I saw he had a real POS from his CB percussion days. Could you recommend one? A cymbal would be harder because he's really picky (and finicky) with his sound. He needs a new crash, but he's always switching brands and its hard to keep up. Members nklarow
Yeah, a crash is a little more than her budget but I was thinking more along the lines of a fun splash cymbal... For a throne, you can't go wrong with a Roc N' Soc. Here's a link to some thrones on MF... And here's a link to the Roc N' Soc, which I think is gonna be recommended by a lot of people on the forum...

Members asdfjkl semi
What are splash and effects cymbals?
Members nklarow
A splash cymbal is a small crash cymbal (generally) found in common sizes such as 6", 8", 10" or 12". If you go larger than that, people usually call them crashes. Members asdfjkl semi
Thanks for all the help, nklarow. I am really out of element here. I think either the throne or a combo of a splash and an effect cymbal will do it. I'll give ma' dukes a call and let her know.
Members nklarow
If he's picky about cymbals, you might want to have your mom take him to a shop and just buy it for him; I know it's not much of a surprise, but at least he gets what HE wants. Other than that, I'd be ecstatic to have my mom buy me a gift related to drumming at 20 years old, and any of the choices there are sure to make him happy. Good luck and I'm happy I could help you... Members Carminemw
Just a thought, find out what he uses and have her pick up something I've had since I started...an all leather gig bag full of goodies...sticks, tuning keys, pocket metronome, all the stuff drummers pick up over the years. I did this for my granddaughter who started playing about 5 months ago. If he truly likes playing, he'll keep it his entire career, way longer than any of the other acutrements. I had hers embroidered with a custom design as well, but that's another option. It does make a good gift for a musical lifetime...
Members BertTheDrummer
I'd shy away from cymbals and thrones, because they are personal choices. I'd echo what Carminemw said. If he doesn't have a stick bag, getting a nice one of those with some pairs of sticks are a good idea. My fiancee just recently got me a tom pack of drumheads for my birthday which I thought was really nice.
