Members gayforjesus
it's a very low orbiting space station. i'm actually in a non-english speaking country where the djembe is not popular at all.
Members FourT6and2
Learn from this guy: http://www.yacubaddy.com/ He's one of the Addy Elders from Ghana. Very good drummer. I studied with him for a while in College.

Members cearleywine
There are many sounds so I don't think there is a wrong way. I like to control the lows with my right in towards the center, and the highs with my left fingers. I treat the djembe as a miniature drum set, so much range. Even for jazz ballads you can swish the heads, also very useful in bossa's with the side to side swishing doing clave patterns on the rim.
Members gayforjesus
i'm actually looking for patterns that work well on a djembe
Members cearleywine
I think it would be harder to find a pattern that didn't.
Members gayforjesus
the thing is, i'm not a drummer, so i'm fairly limited in the number of patterns i can come up with, and i usually bore myself after a while.
Members cearleywine
order this, I picked it up for 5 bucks at a used store. Great to play along to, each track is around 10 minutes.
Members Tomske
The way i got taught (which was very basic and probably not 'correct') was to treat the edge like a hi hat while doing hits with both hands on them, accenting the hits on the edge is like your snare and your bass drum is the centre. not sure if this is helpful but yeah lol. Members FourT6and2
I don't know about the Djembe, but this is the drum I was taught on (Kpanlogo): African drums require specific technique that is not usually taught in the West. Of course, you can just hit them how you like to make sounds. But, there are right and wrong ways to play them according to tradition.
Members rayboomboom
check out Kalani's Ultimate Djembe Jam DVD. He explains things very simply and shows different camera angles.http://www.zzounds.com/item--MVPK01D I've used the one for congas and liked it allot. I have the djembe dvd, my girlfriend checked it out, she's a noob also, and said it was good.
