k, so my fam and i rent this cottage every year, at this po-dunk lake in northwest PA, near Meadville. my moms went there when she was a kid, with her parents, then we went with them, etc. so, it's kinda been tradition for a long time. now that i have a little one, it goes on.

a couple of years ago, my mom passed away. we brought her ashes up to the lake for a final rest. we all drank to her, her fav drink (j&b scotch, YUK!!) so, every year now, it's important to me and my sisters to go there to hang with family and have that drink.

well, this year, we came up to be met by my sister and niece sitting on the roof of their car in front of the cabin. (we had to rent a different cabin than usual.) this was the worst, run-down {censored}-box i have ever seen. sure, i understand these are just little stupid cottages. we laugh at them being horribly out of square, slanted and tilted. but this one had exposed, rusted steel beams. nails poking out. the bedrooms smelled of mildew. the picnic table in the back was falling apart, rotting. all this, for $600/WEEK!!!

we stayed one night, until my wife found a used condom in the back yard, when she was playing with my 15 month old.:mad:

so, she "mentioned" this to the owner (a really sweet old man, who has no idea what's going on; his punk son really "takes care" of things.) punk said things like, "that picnic table wasn't broken yesterday," and, "we have people that LOVE that cottage." well they must have incredibly low standards.

they moved us to another cottage that smelled like urine, but it was at least a lot smaller. and right on the lake. my wife got sick, and we left early. i have to admit, she was a trooper.

on a good note, we found other places that rent really, really nice cottages with level floors (heh heh,) a/c, fireplaces, dishwashers, etc. i usually like this place cuz it gets me away from tv's and phones, etc. but, i think next year i owe my family one of these after this disaster.

Ugh, sounds like a real winner. Sorry you had such a rough time.

When my wife and I got married we had booked a suite at a hotel that looked fabulous online, but when we got there it was dirty, had 1950s appliances, and was dark and depressing. My then-new wife saw it and started to cry. I went to the front desk and complained until they gave me my money back in full.

Then we went and found a sweet suite :) and had a great week!

I hope there are other choices up there that will offer you a more comfortable stay. I am shocked that they get $600 a week for a dump like that. My whole house rental is less than that per month. It's old but doesn't have issues like what you described.

seriously, my sisters did find some good ones up there, so next year will be good. just a shame that people give no thought that you get only on vaca, sometimes, per year. it's a shame to spend it like that.

Haha I stayed at a hotel in Vegas for the night because I was at the Grand Canyon before and we were going up to see my Aunt in Colorado. We were to close to Las Vegas not to stop, so we found a hotel by a casino for $50 a night. It looked alright from the outside, but to get a room with more than 1 bed, we had to go to one of their buildings outside of the main high rise. (There were 2 highrises and 3 motel-esque POS's) So anyway we got there, and found out the place smelled lke someone had dropped a gallon of milk on the carpet and never cleaned it. Plus the walls between the rooms were 1 inch thick so you could hear EVRYTHING.

on our honeymoon back in ought four, the wife and I had a night booked at a place our friends recommended to us on the California coast.

we booked the cheapest room they had, being poor. when we got there it was tiny as expected, but pleasant enough except it was a mess-- bed unmade, just looked awful. I went back to the office and sure enough housekeeping missed that room and had left for the day.

they gave us keys to a different room. We opened the door and our jaws dropped-- the Camelot Suite. full kitchen, canopy king bed, couches, a balcony overlooking the Russian River, and a hottub outside.

Place is called the Jenner Inn, in Jenner CA. great place.

yeah, after all of that i would have rather been camping! but my wife wouldn't go for that {censored}! she kinda princess-like!

vacation, now-a-days, means no fights, lots of booze, hotels and dinners and plenty for the kids to do (in other words, we drink and "watch" the kids while they play and leave us alone.)
