Members mlwarriner
considering the possibility of leaving the KC area, moving away from here. plans are to stay with my current company, but in a different region. i've got the skills and reputation to pretty much walk into any of our offices and be at the same stature i have here. we've got offices all over the country, so my options are pretty open.however, based on my dealings with people in a couple of our other offices, the front-runners (right now) are albuquerque (i have no friggin' idea how to spell that word ) new mexico and norfolk virginia. with norfolk being in the lead...people from there (either there of those theres :D ), care to shed some light on your area? housing costs? traffic? child care, school systems, etc...it's all still way up in the air right now, but... Members rikshaw
i'm in the norfolk area. i'll try to get you some info tomorrow. we have several people on hcbf from this area. i will say that its kind of tough to find a decent band around here as a bass player. there are a bunch of classic rock bands and some really young kids trying to put together thrash metal if youre into that. Members miles to go
HDR Dallas is growing like gangbusters, plenty of opportunity here. Housing's pretty cheap and the winters are mild. (We just don't talk about the summers...)
Members Texas Noise Factory
I'll probably be ending up in Dallas in about 5 years. Lotsa family there, and it's a pretty supportive city for music from what I understand...

Members FromAbove
We moved from KC last summer and wish we could go back. Cool laid back city. Has what you need without out the apparent hassle of a big city. Hard to describe. Take a look around before you move. Where you're at might be where you want to stay. Newport News here! I agree with rikshaw..........there's a crap load of 'dime a dozen' so so blah bands here and if you are a really good bass player, it'll take some time to find a really good set of musicians! It is easier to find/form a rock band than any other style. I've been here since 2001 and am still searching!! LOL! I'm in a band but the musicians are lacking! If your job pays well, housing is affordable but are rising fast. I bought my house at the right time! There's a ton of apt. complexes! There's minimal public transportation so a car is essential! CMS Author Craig Vecchione Posted January 18, 2006 CMS Author Share Posted January 18, 2006 You should be hearing from burdizzos....he works at the Naval Shipyard, I think.I have some family who were career Navy and lived there. Seems like a good spot. Has to be more fun than New Mexico (note how I avoid trying to spell Al Bacurkie)

Close, I work at the Norfolk Naval Station and at all of the surrounding Navy owned bases. I've been here for ten years and in that time this place has gone from a crappy Navy town to a really nice place to live. I'm at work now and the {censored} is hitting the fan, but I'll give more detail about this town later.
Members bnyswonger
Albequerque is a cool town IMO - I've only ever been there touring, but it struck me as a pretty arty place.
Members B-Bottom
harrisburg PA isn't bad. Housing is fairly cheap. problem is that the music scene is pretty non existant for this area. If you do happen to find a band though Philly, DC, Pittsburg, Baltimore and NYC aren't to terribly far. The thing that I really hate about this area is that the weather is always an extreme. We have about a week of spring and about the same for fall. Then we plunge into the unbearable humidity of summer and blistering cold of winter. Members misterhinkydink
As a resident, I can tell you a little about Albuquerque. Housing is the most expensive in the NE part of the city. The west mesa, southern area and Rio Rancho are the cheapest (~150K). There's also the east mountains where housing is pretty cheap. I live downtown in a real nice area of older homes that range from ~$100k to over $1000k. Schools are about like most places; there's the good and the bad. I think RR has pretty good schools. Some schools in ABQ are great while others are horrible. Many people send there kids to private schools but I think it's more out of fear. My daughter goes to public Albuquerque High and does fine. My neighbor, who owns a big law firm, sent one kid to private school and one to public. Both did great. ABQ is also the home of UNM which is a pretty good school. Traffic is more of an issue on the west side and the NE. Getting across the river can be a problem if you commute one side to the other. Population density is high on the west side and much of the area is poorly planned. Weather is pretty nice. The altitude is about a mile so we get a little snow in the winter. The summers don't get real hot. Water is an issue here since the early '90s when it was discovered the underground aquifer wasn't as extensive as everyone thought. The music scene is best downtown and around the university. Fishing, hiking, biking, skiing, hunting, etc. are all close by. Albuquerque is also the home the Balloon Fiesta (first Saturday of October). It's OK and getting better. There's now this thing called Rapid Ride that runs 10 minutes between buses and has few stops. It's pretty speedy but limited to Central Ave and the Uptown area. The ABQ metro area is really spread out. Train service will be starting between Santa Fe, here and Belen which is south of here. There's also commuter buses to Santa Fe and Los Alamos. I don't know about Rio Rancho. http://www.cabq.gov/transit/index.html
