Members rastafarian_nz
I've heard a great many different sides to this, but was wondering if you guys have any wisdom on it. If you drive a preamp tube to the edge of distortion, will it compress the signal, or are they just linear like SS? Also, is there an audible difference between tube preamp distortion and SS preamp distortion?
Members Thumper
Welcome to the Forum! I'm not sure about your compression question, so I'll leave that to others to answer. As for tube versus solid state compression---tubes are better. Solid state amps are great for offering a lot of clean headroom, but if you're after a decent dirty tone, go with a tube preamp. There are some tube-driven stomp boxes out there, such as the Tube Works Blue Tube (now out of production) and EBS. The Blue Tube is great, and they do turn up used every now and then. Members illidian
To my knowledge, pre-amp tubes will indeed compress the signal as they are pushed.
