Members vooter
Guitar player here. I play bass every once in awhile when it's needed. I don't have a bass amp, but am interested in getting one. One question...could I kill two birds with one stone and get an Ampeg Portaflex and use it as both a guitar amp and bass amp? I've read that it sounds pretty good with guitar. Thoughts???
Members Derek5272
Go to the store and try it out. You can't hurt a bass amp by playing a guitar through it (thought it is inhumane to submit it to those high frequencies), and if it has a good EQ (too lazy to look it up) you can probably get a decent tone out of it. Members Thumper
The old flip-top Portaflex Ampegs are classic bass amps. They also sound great for guitar if you're looking for a warm tone with a little bit of grit. Don't expect a lot of volume, as most Portaflexes are 35-45 watts depending on the model. If you're looking for high-gain, massive distorttion, look elsewhere. Steer clear of the late '60s/early '70s solid state models. While they sound fine for bass, they work less well for guitar. Good luck.
