Try a different set of flats sometime and see if they work better for you. I doubt you'd do any damage by sanding them down, but you may also create a sharp spot that could really hurt. Well check around on the web and see if you can find them at a good price. Thomastics, I think are made in Vienna. They are the only flats that I like to use.
