it depends on how you want to drop it...

 

most people do drop D, which just involves tuning the low E to D.

 

If you want to tune to D, then drop all strings as follows:

low E-D

A-G

D-C

G-F

 

then there is dropped C, which is the same as tuning to D, but drop the low E which is tuned to D to C...

Buy a 5 string and you won't have to worry about it.

I use a dropc# tuning for most of the stuff in the current band.

 

C#-D#-C#-F#

 

Works great, it's jsut a drop D tuning and then drop all 4 strings a 1/2 step.

i just want the same sound as a 5 string, B thru D strings

then you will need to change your string set to B-E-A-D, which is basically buying a 5 string set, and throwing out the G.

 

You will more than likely need either a new nut, or file the old one to accomodate the larger size of the B-E-A-D strings.

Filing the nut with the b-string itself works well.
