Big Muff - Big Fuzz

RAT - Good distortion

Turbo RAT - Nastier good distortion

Boss Bass OD - Can become distorted

Boss DS-1 - Still a nasty unit

You can almost try anything. Too many to mention. Go to some music stores and try something out, then buy a used one from Ebay!

Pity the search is on or off here. Major suckdom.

I use a Big Muff, Turbo RAT and the distortion on my MXR M-80. I have used a Tube Screamer and enjoyed that. Also a DS-1 for a short while, miss that one in a way.

i really like my MXR distortion +

i have also owned both Russian and American Big Muff's...i prefer the Russian to the American, i guess i don't really like fuzz or at least the band im in has no need for fuzz bass..

but the MXR distortion + is really good

I've used/own/presently own the following:

Big Muff - best fuzz out there IMO

Death by Audio Soundwave Breakdown - loss of bottom and no level control

Death By Audio Harmonic Xformer - loss of bottom and limited control

American Woman - classic rock vibe with a strange gate control

Sansamp GT2 - very responsive to playing dynamics with lots of tone options

Digitech Bass Driver - lots of control and options

MXR DI + distortion - great EQ set but tinny distortion

Frantone Lo Tone - Big bass boost with relatively clean fuzz (like bees buzzing)

Fulltone Bass Drive - Good all around tone. Boost option allows two settings.

If I had $150 and no pedals I will buy a used GT2 (about $75) and an American Woman or one used Fulltone Bass Drive.

For an "ok" sample of Turbo RAT tone checkout my old band's myspace. They still have Emotional Fortification up, in which I used a Turbo RAT on a medium setting.

The second half you can really hear it get angry.

A good example of RAT/Turbo RAT tone is some of the Sonic Youth stuff from Dirty and Goo era. Fender P, Thunderbird or BC Rich Mockingbird through Turbo RAT and Mesa... MMMMMM :)

The MXR M-80 DI+ distortion isn't the thickest out there, but it comes down to how you set it. It has the MXR noise gate built in which I reckon is bloody fantastic. Good for adding grind to the sound.
