Members LoC
I want to get a microphone to record me playing bass. It would go directly into my computer. Can anyone suggest a good one for under $20?
Moderators Kindness Posted May 19, 2007 Moderators Share Posted May 19, 2007 Rather than spend $20 on a low end mic, why not go direct?

Members burdizzos
+1 to DI, but I got a pair of these for my guitar players and they work rather well. They are Chinese made SM-57 clones.
Members mrcrow
i used a mike to record onto a tape deck and it really softened up and urb-ed my sound...it was a mike with a battery and a long slim one...could have been a shotgun:cool:
Members Apendecto
Up your ante to $90 and you could pick up a Sure SM-57. Hell you could probably find one used and beat up for half of that. Yo.

Members Jateca
This isn't for live application. What's that got to do with the price of fish? To be honest I can't really see you getting a better sound via a crappy mic than with a DI, is there any particular reason you want to use a mic? Members brake
Get one of those Behringer Ultra DI boxes. They're not the best, but certainly not the worst either.
Members BrutalTechnical
Well if you're not taking the DI route, try looking for a fairly cheap or midpriced kick drum mic. I've recorded with one before and it worked out surprisingly well, its suited to the low frequency and loud attack.
Members Apendecto
Yeah, they're not too great for the low end, but I've had some alright results with them, especially combined with a DI. What's that got to do with the price of fish? To be honest I can't really see you getting a better sound via a crappy mic than with a DI, is there any particular reason you want to use a mic? I hear you man. I've had better results with a 57 than a Sure Beta 52 kick mic. Could be a million things, though. Yo.

One of the best cab micing results I got was on a Marshall cab with a 1x15 and 2x10s. Audix D6 on the 15 (damn I love the D6 so much ) and a 57 on one of the 10s. I'd reccomend the D6 completely, you ever tried one?
Members Smokinfiddler
if you are miking an acoustic for practice purposes I would say get a Phillips from walmartif you are needing something for higher quality I would spend a little mmre and get a MXL condenser mic with built in phantom power. otherwise I would go direct into the USB serial port as others have mentioned.
