Members Thumper
http://www.sweetwater.com/store/detail/JBassSVMNat/ The Squier Vintage Modified Jazz gets good reviews around here. I don't own one, but have played one in a local shop. It's a nice bass for the price. Sweetwater is a great company. They're customer service is first-rate, and their prices are just as good or better than MF.
Members guitarman
I'm a 6 string guy myself and I have two basses, an '83 MIJ Ibanez Roadstar series 2 and a POS 'Guitar Research' that I got free at a Sam Ash 'spend 'x' dollars and get 'y' free' sale that I've never played. The Ibenez bass plays like a dream. The stock pickup has great tone and the neck is smouth, fast and as comfortable as my Fender strats'. If you can find a used Ibanez Roadstar, pick one up. If you wanna go new, Rondo has some great looking basses for the price and you can use the money saved on getting a higher powered amp. I bought a Hartke A100 a few weeks ago and I'm having a blast playing my bass (my old bass amp was a Crate 15w).
