Members fretless
Warmoth offers a few thoughts on weight and tone http://www.warmoth.com/bass/options/options_bodywoods.cfm I have a " feather weight" Swamp ash P bass that is just under 8lbs . My Alder Fender P is exactly the same weight . I like'em light
Members Optimus Prime
I know a lot of people who think that heavier basses sound better. But I don't think I've played enough basses and payed attention to their sound compared to the weight closely enough. I do know that my J bass is very heavy and sounds like a beast. Members Mytola
More wheight = more mass and tighter grain. I would think that it would affect tone, but I'm not sure how much. Each individual piece of wood is different.
Members Pyralus
Every wood has a different tone- I have a Japanese Fender jazz and it's heavy as hell. I definitely think weight has something to do with tone, in basses as well as speakers. In basses, weight means a denser wood with a different harmonic resonance frequency. Let's all remember that the acoustic properties of a bass will give you a very good idea of the way an instrument will sound once you plug it in. Members L-1329
Well I have a super heavy Gibson that sounds great, so yes heavy weight does make great tone. Wait, I also have a nice and light LeCompte that also sounds great, so then heavy weight does not make great tone...
