It depends on the output of the on-board preamp. If the output is strong enough to drive the power amp, then no. If it is not, then yes. Members rpsands Posted March 3, 2010 Members Share Posted March 3, 2010 Almost always. Very few basses can put out enough juice to run a power amp. Most pedal preamps can't even do it very well with higher input voltage power amps. Also as that implies, it depends on the power amp a lot. The new Peavey IPRs have an input sensitivity around .775vrms instead of the 1.2-1.5v more common in the industry, for example. A bass would have a lot better chance of driving one of those.
