Members mlwarriner
is it possible/feasible to take an amp with a dead power section and convert it into a preamp? realistically?
Members perrydabassman
It would probably be more trouble than it would be worth....

Moderators Kindness Posted March 25, 2010 Moderators Share Posted March 25, 2010 Just lugging around a bigger device than you need and such. It's not a big deal. What kind of amp?

What kind of amp? trace. old-ish. based on price, i assume it doesn't work. unsure why. seller is little to no help. price is good, IMO.
Members Gregidon
Probably better to just fix it....
Members mlwarriner
Probably better to just fix it.... that would be the obvious first choice, yes. but if it's gonna be more to fix it, than to convert it and add a power amp... Members Guttermouth
is it possible/feasible to take an amp with a dead power section and convert it into a preamp?realistically? it would depend on the circuit layout and power supply. iirc some of those old traces were modular and had the preamp in one chassis and power amp in the other.in that case you could just disconnect the power amp and be good to go. Members bassthumpintwin
Probably better to just fix it.... This would be my first option to look into. Heck, could be as simple of a fix as a loose/disconnected wire, or a bad component that only costs a buck or two. Then again, if it does turn out to be more hassle than it's worth, I do think it's a good idea to try to recycle the preamp circuit just for the heck of it.
