Members 45below
Hey guys,I'm a complete newbie to bass guitars.. I know how to play them but know nothing about tones, sounds, amps, etc. I've always liked the bass tone that Mike Dirnt uses in the song "Longview" by Green Day. What kind of bass would I need to get this tone? Is it the bass or the amp? I would much rather just play through a PA, as that is how I would use it for home recording. Like I said, I'm completely new to bass guitars, so forgive my ignorance.thanks
Members Reverend179
Mike's bass chain on Dookie was pretty esoteric- Evil Twin DI, Gibson G-3, and GK amps I believe. You can get a pretty good approximation with a P-bass and a bright amp. There are a few different schools of thought when it comes to amplification. Primarily you either use an amplifier mainly as a means with which to make yourself louder on stage, with the PA doing the heavy lifting. The other major train of thought is using the amplifier as a toneshaping device, whether it be through equalization or through distortion. It would honestly depend on what you're trying to do with your bass, but remember that in most cases you're gonna have the soundguy slap a DI in front of your rig (or take the signal from the DI built into your amp) and let the PA be your amp. What are some of your favorite bands?

Members 45below
Thanks for all of the quick replies! There's a lot of good information here. Thank you much. What are some of your favorite bands? I like rock and alternative mostly... everything from Good Charlotte, to Green Day, to Lifehouse, to Shindown, etc. I would like a budget bass that will give me a good all-around sound that'll work with those styles, but I particularly like the sound Mike Dirnt had on Dookie. Thanks both of you for the replies. I really appreciate it.
