Members jrcorp
To continue from my last thread, I'm still on the search for the right setup. I'm going for a combo or head/cab setup that can keep up in a small jam session but is smallish and affordable for me. Right now, these are the options I'm considering locally (ALL items are USED): GK 400RB (III?) for $175 (talked buyer down) - http://providence.craigslist.org/msg/2228023309.html SWR Workingman's 2004 for $200 @ Daddy's (local Mom & Pop)Fender Rumble 75 for $200 @ Daddy'sAmpeg BA 112 for $180 @ Guitar CenterAcoustic B200 for $200 @ Guitar Center Here's some other stuff further away from me that's around the same price point:Fender Rumble 60 for $150 - http://newlondon.craigslist.org/msg/2228438873.htmlPeavey Basic 112 for $150 - http://newlondon.craigslist.org/msg/2220210168.htmlGK 800RB for $300, I'd be looking at the Avatar 115 for $220 - http://worcester.craigslist.org/msg/2229939966.htmlSWR Workingman's 4004 for $250 - http://worcester.craigslist.org/msg/2227311615.htmlLab Series 2x15 for $200 (kind of big) - http://hartford.craigslist.org/msg/2227731631.htmlNon-working Bag End S-15D (curious) for $75 - http://boston.craigslist.org/gbs/msg/2230837063.htmlOld Fender Bassman SP3100 for $200 - http://boston.craigslist.org/gbs/msg/2229865025.html Any opinions? I hope you guys don't get sick of me asking for your thoughts. Please keep in mind that my (tiny) budget is around $200ish right now, and if I buy a head I probably won't be spending much more than that down the road on a cab. As always, I appreciate your advice.
Members Jazzneck
It's just me but if the prices are that close between CL and new, I'd be at the store playing those new 4 amps you listed and pick which one you like best. Members jrcorp
I edited the post, but stupid me, I neglected to mention that they're all used. I played a new BA112 at Daddy's, which looked different (maybe not as good?) than the used one at GC; I also played the Fender. Of the two, I liked the Ampeg more for its sound, though it has less options than the Fender. I thought the design is nicer, and it's more cubic in shape so it feels more compact. I would like to get the SWR hooked up so I can hear that next time, as I feel it would be better in the long-term than any of the combos. I should also try the BA112 at GC along with the Acoustic if I'm considering that. But I think any of the products I'm considering would suit me fine for now. Members Rezrover
I'd get the 800RB, two amps in one with an adjustable crossover.
Members jrcorp
Yeah that's tough, because the 800RB seems like a better amp for the price than most if not all of everything else. But I don't know if I'd feel comfortable throwing out the $300 right away. I guess I'm ridiculously cheap - the most expensive item that I personally have purchased was my Fender 2x12 guitar combo for $150.
Members MillenniumBlues
Up until my recent purchase of Markbass and TC gear, I played Fender bass amps. I've had no problems with them so far. Can't comment on the other brands you are investigating; I've never owned any of them.
Members gspointer
I'd get the 800RB, two amps in one with an adjustable crossover. This is what I'd be looking at at well. FWIW, I have a GK 400 I bought used probably 25 years ago. I bought an old, used GK800 3 or so years ago, I haven't used either for a while, but I would still trust them to fire up and rock out if I wanted to. Members georgestrings
I'd get the 800RB, two amps in one with an adjustable crossover. Yeah, that's the best of the bunch that he listed - with a good cab, that'd take care of most bassist's needs - and sound great in the process... - georgestrings

By going cheap, you ofetn cost yourself more money in the long run - while putting up with inferior performance along the way... - georgestrings
Members T. Alan Smith
Out of everything on your list, 2 stood out to me-> GK 800RB & Bag End 15" cab(clear winnah)> Ampeg BA112(likely pushing it if jamming w/people)
Members mlwarriner
off of that list, i'd do the 800RB for sure. the price isn't too bad, and the 800RB is definitely my all-time favorite SS amp.
