Par cans get their name from the bulb they use. Par 46, 56 and 64 fixtures use a sealed beam bulb with a PARabolic reflector. This parabolic reflector controls the beam spread, in general you can order sealed beam bulbs in Narrow, Medium and Wide beams.

A black finish on the inside of a par fixture cuts down on unwanted reflectance.

True enough, but in the greater scheme of things, I haven't noticed a big difference. I used black par cans for years, and finally sold that system. When I replaced it, I got chrome cans becase they looked cooler on stage.

I've never noticed a difference but there probably is a slight one. I choose my cans for the look of them. Usually black to be honest..
