Members smartinez1984
We want to purchase some headphones for our drummer so that he can basically hear a monitor mix thereby eliminating the need for a floor monitor. Any recommendations? We are currently running a generic headset from the "headphones out" on the mixer and it does an ok job but we'd like to use a monitor-type setup. I imagine there are headphones made just for this type of application but I like to hear some recommendations. Thanks for all assistance. -Samson
CMS Author Craig Vecchione Posted April 8, 2004 CMS Author Share Posted April 8, 2004 For live gigs or rehearsal? For rehearsal our drummer uses an open-type walkman style headphone. For live I'd recommend something one of Shure's IEM's
Members smartinez1984
It'll be for both, we actually rehearse in our church so the environment only changes when we go out to perform. So, how exactly do these things get used, are they internally powered and connected to an aux out? Thanks! -Samson
CMS Author Craig Vecchione Posted April 8, 2004 CMS Author Share Posted April 8, 2004 Well, you can start out with just a set of their E2 earphones. They have a 1/8" TRS plug so are completely compatible with any common output source. For lowest bucks rehearsal setup, some of these and a small headphone amp like a Rolls, Art or Samson, and some cables/adaptors will put you in business. Run a line from your board's monitor out to the amp, adjust levels, and play. For gigs, this would be cheesy to the max, so you'll eventually want to get one of the IEM wireless systems. Lots of $$$ but I think long term they are easier and way more effective than conventional wedges, amps, etc. Your back will thank you even if your wallet won't. CMS Author Craig Vecchione Posted April 8, 2004 CMS Author Share Posted April 8, 2004 Oh that's right this is the drummer....the Shure wired system would probably be fine unless he's in the habit of getting up and jumping around the stage or something...... Members Rbts
yea, I agree the shure E2. Wired will be fine for the drummer. Get some sort of a limiter to put in the line so nothing bad happens.
Members smartinez1984
Rbts, Can you enlighten me on the limiter comment? What exactly can happen without one? -Samson
CMS Author Craig Vecchione Posted April 9, 2004 CMS Author Share Posted April 9, 2004 You just don't want to damage a driver or an ear. The Shure wired beltpack would serve this function well, and allow the drummer control over his volume and even the mix if you set it up that way, though it adds greatly to the price. Members smartinez1984
Ahhh... makes sense. Yea, we were looking into the ear monitor sets and it looks like a good place to start would be with the drummer. Hmmm... thanks! -Samson
