Members agedhorse
JBL had power amps for many years, the most recent pre-Harmon units were made by QSC and are very reliable.

The intent was to offer what I know of for model numbers, so you could have a reference of what does exist and try to match up what he's selling to a recognizable number. Neither the SP nor the 91 seem to relate to any model number scheme JBL uses. Maybe the Auzzie export numbers are different??? I offered the list hoping you could find something on the cabinet that matches up a little closer. Who knows... maybe the SP91 is a date code or serial number or something? Maybe they were some custom shop thing... although for the last 10+ years... I think all the custom shop stuff is AS series tagged. Of course... back in the good ole days, I saw a group of what appeared to be JBL 4560's in an install with very authentic JBL looking logos silk screened on the side and authentic JBL looking jackplates, but they were made out of particle board... and JBL 4560's were certainly never made out of particle board. JBL did have model numbers such as: C36, C38, C50... up to C78WX, and: S36, S38... etc..., and: L44, L75... etc..., and: 001, 030, S1, S7, S8, S12 (kits), and: D36 series, and D38 series, and: A bunch of other L series stuff, and: EN series stuff But all of these model numbers are getting wayyyy back there... like 30 years or more ago. And then... more than once I've driven half way across the country to buy some JBL boxes... just to get there and find out the boxes are actually Carvins, or Dr. Fong, or Sunn, or "my Skilsaw project", or some-other such cabinet loaded with (some) JBL drivers (or the cabinet might have been shown the picture of the shadow of a brochure containing a JBL logo... or was built from a JBL plan (sort-of)... being sold as "JBL Cabinets"... And... JBL's been selling JBL amplifiers for decades... most of which are very, very good amps. Maybe big, and heavy by today's standards... but very good amps. Members matt emery
You either misspelt or msiread....thet are AP91's, not SP91's but either way thanks for your help. i'm off to actually have a look at the stuff tonight, so far i am just reading an add in the paper. the amp is an MPA600, which i have managed to find specs on for on JBL's website.... 600watts/channel @ 4 ohms, 2 RU, 44 lbs also has a Crown macrotech of around the same power, (a 1200?) for just a few dollars more, same weight, same power, no speakons. and event though i am not in the market (well kinda) JBL subs, 2226 loaded S bins, 4 wheels, birch ply could be anything, but i'l have a look a tthem all the same. Guest Anonymous
FWIW: About 15 years ago I bought the "Joe" system... advertised in the local paper as "A Huge JBL Arena Touring Rig $2500". I called the guy... he had 8 horn loaded subs and 8 mid-high boxes and 4 horn packs... he didn't know what any of the model numbers were... but was sure it was all JBL stuff... bought if from a buddy of his in LA that was "Touring Arenas"... and had upgraded his system... bla, ba, blah, blah, blah... Anyway... I drove over and had a look (and ended up buying it). The cabinets were just unbelievable... they were about 6 ft. wide and 2ft. deep front to back and about 3ft. high... with a pair of 15's stacked and firing into each other at about a 45 deg angle... and horn flairs on the cabinets that started at the drivers and flared out the full width of the box (mind you, the boxes were a total of 2ft. deep). The mids where some-what modeled (as best that I could tell) after EV MTL-4 boxes... with 15's firing into the sides of the boxes (up, down, left, and right)... but no ports... I guess all the sound was suppose to emanate from the back sides of the speakers (or the side panels of the cabinets). The mids were about 2ft. cubed. Both the "subs" and "mids" were constructed with 1/4" plywood and then covered with DIYS fiberglass (which was peeling off in big chunks). The "horn packs" were regular JBL 2370 aluminum horn flairs with 2441's bolted to them... just the horns and drivers... no cabinet or framework around them. The 15's were all fairly fresh JBL 2225's (all 48 of them)... and everything worked. His price was a bargain at the time for the drivers... I paid him and drug the whole pile home. I never did spark it up... just unloaded all the drivers and landfilled the boxes. After I unloaded the boxes, I found out the 15's were basically sequentially serial numbered. Oh... the "insulation" inside the boxes was Styrofoam egg cartons stapled to the insides. "S" bins? Like 4530 scoops?
