Members Gary in NJ
What is the rule of thumb for baffling a ported speaker? If the ports are on the front side of the speaker enclosure, would I place fiberglass batting on the back, one side, and bottom of the enclosure? Members agedhorse
Not baffling but adding acoustic material or damping material. The baffle is the board the speakers mount on. I personally like to put damping on the back, one side and top or bottom at a minimum.
Members Gary in NJ
Yes, you are correct, I meant to ask about damping material. I opened my boxes this weekend to replace/upgrade the woofers, and was shocked to learn that Peavey didn't use any damping material inside the enclosure. No wonder they sound like hollow boxes...they are!
Members agedhorse
It was a design choice, I personally like the sound of a heavily damped box but for the MI market the added midrange distortion from the reflected midrange passing back through the cone after reflecting on the back of the box sounds good... like those magic sound enhancement boxes that are so popular to the same target audience.
