Members Sojourner7
Hey all. I've been browsing for an all around compressor that I may be able to get one or 2 of for vocals and maybe some kick and snare. I was looking at the dbx stuff. Theres the 166xl, 266xl and the 1046 which looks nice at having 4 channels. Dbx seems to be pretty respected for their compressors so whats the big differences between these and are there other brands comparable in quality to these that are not too expensive? Thanks! Members Gomer Pyle
I bought a 266XL new about 6 years ago and ran the mains through it at a show and found any output gain above 0 resulted in much distortion. I then did a test at my house using a CD source and leaving the output gain at 0. I compared it to one of my Ashly CL50s and found the Ashly was far more musical at a 30 to 1 ratio with the output gain set at +18 than the DBX was at a 2 to 1 ratio at 0 gain. The gate is horrible. I haven't touched it since, JUNK. I do however like my 160X and all my 163Xs, Paul.
Members agedhorse
Gomer, by chance did you have the DBX set to -10 input sensitivity and drive it with +4dBu? I haven't found your problem in any of the DBX products I have here.
Members Gomer Pyle
I tried it both ways, I don't trust it on anything. Maybe someday I'll find a use for it but I doubt it, Paul.
Members agedhorse
Are you talking about gain or level? Your problem makes no technical sense at all. The clipping level is on the order of +22 or so.
