Hello.

I'm creating prototype of new instrument and looking for a manufacturer.
Do anybody knows where to order, custom shaped velocity sensitive multi touch screen display /fingerboard?

This device is a synthesizer, midi controller, 3D point controller. With multi touch screen display /fingerboard, which is used both for playing and options, like controlling oscillators and other. This will work in standalone mode as synthesizer, using minimal of function, and together with software (DAW) as 3D point controller or Midi messages. This DAW have another type of audio synthesis, and have a graphical interface, and will use 3Dpoint messages instead of Midi, which is not flexible enough.

This synthesizer will be designed to play independently with 2 hands(like on piano), playing many melodies in same time(till 4), with a different sounds from stored soundset, complete arrangement with different sounds, that will turn playing to real-time, music live performance. This instrument will require advanced playing style, without strings, playing on multi touch screen fingerboard.

There is more detaled pictures on:
https://ch.pinterest.com/juhnirhyt/multi-touch-screen-synthesizer/
with examples about, how sound from soundset can be assigned on fingerboard.

This instrument will use a part of codes, of graphical interface and audio synthesis of DAW, so that both DAW and synthesizer will work in same way.

Hello Daddymack.

Thanks for this list of manufacturers.

Now I got an email from one touch screen manufacturer.

"Thanks for sharing a few more details. Your design would definitely be the first of its kind, and though it is not too far beyond our capabilities and is a very intriguing concept, it is not quite in the wheelhouse of what we manufacture. To build a prototype of a touchscreen display that is not the typical rectangular shape, you would be looking at an NRE fee ($20,000) and a tooling fee (TBD). Also, as this design seems to be a consumer product, we may not be the right fit to bring your concept to life. If you have any more questions, please do not hesitate to ask."

so...ask them who might be interested in your idea.

The reality, though, is that the development costs could be prohibitive [$20k is actually not outrageous], and you need to evaluate the target market.

What would be the time frame for ROI?

How to market this?

How many units could you sell?

Have you applied for a patent?

Thank you for your post.

"The reality, though, is that the development costs could be prohibitive [$20k is actually not outrageous], and you need to evaluate the target market"

$20k it is only for NRE fee, in addition there is also tooling(TBD) fee, for assembly fixtures, plastics/metals, etc. They told, in another email, how much it will costs and this is really much. They said "In theory, we do have the ability to build the touchscreen display, but it wouldn't be feasible without volume and a large upfront investment."
There is also other (bigger) companies, who allready focusing and have this technology for "free form" or curved displays. One of them answered : "due to our company strategic policy, we only have connected with specific customers. So, it is difficult to provide customized displays to you."

I'm looking now both where to order display for prototype and a manufacturer /company, who want to create something really new, not another copy of product, or modificated version of other products.

You are right, I ignored the tooling cost since they didn't state it, but typically the NRE is the killer. Tooling gets defrayed over units built.

I still have to ask if you have applied for a patent, because showing your concept around without any protection is asking to be ripped off [don't ask how I know...].

However, if other companies have a display/process that is similar to yours, then you may be SOL.

I take it you have not built a working prototype?

This is allready a big and known company. But in situation when you are not a company, as a person, they aren't easy to contact. As I allready told, one of them answered : "due to our company strategic policy, we only have connected with specific customers. So, it is difficult to provide customized displays to you." Another one still not answering.

This prototype require hardware parts, which does not exist. Without display/fingerboard this prototype can not be built.

There is another option creating prototype, using rectangular shaped display. But it must be also ordered (and this will be also not cheap, because it must be velocity sensitive and have 8-10 touch points). And fingerboard of guitar is not a rectangle, this prototype would be a solution only for temporary testing time.
