Members Telecruiser
At our church we have a 20-25 person choir. They stand on a tiered riser with about 5-7 people wide and 4 deep. Right now they are just using a couple of cardiod mics (not sure the brand) to pick up the voices and as you might imagine they don't cover the entire group. I suggested a couple of large diaphragm mics, maybe something on the order of a couple of TLM 102's. What would any of you suggest?
Members BillESC
U853 choir mics from Audio Technica. Designed to do exactly what you're trying to accomplish. They can be hung or stand mounted.
Members Telecruiser
I went to the A-T site and and noticed they have a number of models and elements for the U853 mics. Any suggestions? The mics they are using now are placed high on a stand about 8' from the singers.
Members BillESC
I use the U853R. For rentals I send it out with a boom mic stand, for installs, it hangs.
Members Scodiddly
The size of the diaphragm has nothing to do with how well it'll cover a choir. The best choir mics are usually very small diaphragm... Earthworks makes something very nice, though a bit too expensive for most people. Beyond that the AT mic is pretty much a standard. Members agedhorse
Cardiod, small diaphram is best for most users, 2 are PLENTY to cover crossed at abouyt a 30 degree angle 5-6 feet in front of the first row. May not be perfect but you will hit 85-90% without the chance of making a fool of yourself.
