Heads Up: I ran into the dreaded Ricoh Chipset issue with my Windows 7 laptop (Lenovo T410). Apparently the firewire port on this chipset is incompatible with the SL (and many other audio devices). This isn't a problem with Presonus products, it is a bad implementation of the Ricoh Chipset and drivers.

 

After several unsuccessful attempts to get it working, I had to go purchase an Expresscard firewire adapter that has a Texas Instruments chipset. Specifically, I bought the Syba SD-EXPC34-2F Expresscard, which is on Presonus' list of compatible devices (located here).

 

Once installed, the Expresscard and UC/VSL worked perfectly. So...anyone considering purchasing this board should check their computer and be prepared. It isn't a showstopper, but it would have saved me some time if I knew about it beforehand. Next I will try some recording and report back with the results.

Thanks for the heads-up. You'd think "FireWire is FireWire," but apparently not when it comes to audio. Not that FireWire was ever intended to carry audio in the first place :eek:

Just to affirm: tado921 is right. I've got the same chip in an Alienware laptop and a Dell Precision laptop. Neither one wants anything to do with the StudioLive. Or with the others I've had in the past: Presonus FireStudio Mobile, Focusrite Saffire Pro 40 (and 24DSP), TC Desktop Konnect 6. Lucky to get them to pass audio at all. A lot of the time, the control panel apps won't even work. Dedicated ExpressCard firewire adapter works perfectly.

Actually, from my research it appears that this Ricoh chipset is problematic for many devices, including video cameras and such. Its a crapshoot as to whether it will work or not, but most of the time it doesn't.

 

I did some quick recording with Capture yesterday, and found it very easy to use. I thought about posting some screenshots like Craig did at the beginning of the thread, but there is no need. Anyone who can read simple directions can be making good recordings in no time flat. I will be recording our next rehearsal with it, and will probably use the recording to put together a demo CD.

 

IMHO, if that was all there is I would feel like I got a great value from this purchase. I still have StudioOne and the remote functions to play with.:thu:

Actually tado, those were my screen shots (not Craig's) you refer to, but I agree--it's incredibly fast and intuitive to operate capture. The 16.0.2 is designed to do multi-track capture in a live situation, and for that to be successful, the process has to be dirt simple. (Because of all the other stuff you have to contend with at a gig.) Fortunately, PreSonus makes it so.

 

IMHO, if that was all there is I would feel like I got a great value from this purchase. I still have StudioOne and the remote functions to play with.

OOPS, sorry Jon! :)

 

I recorded our rehearsal this week (piece of cake), and the band really appreciates the instant playback. I think for the first time we can really hear how we sound from FOH, and I will be able to use the recording to rough in the mix at gigs without having the full band playing. Our first gig with this board will be tonight, and I will report back with the results.

 

Quick question: Is there any way to enable the firewire return on all channels at once for playback purposes? I can click on them one at a time, but it would be nice to be able to get them all with one click.

This mixer is exactly what I was looking for!

What I wanted:
-Record full band simultaneously
-in some instances record midi drums from an e-kit, routed to my mac trigger VST sounds and back out to the mixer for monitoring.
-Signal would go back to mixer in order to have enough Aux outs for independent headphone mixes.

My questions:
-How is the latency on the MIDI?
-How many iphones/ipads can control the mixer at anytime? I'd like to give each musician the ability to set his own mix through their portable device.

Ok, gig update: everything was fine, no problems. I kept it simple this time out, no remote or recording. The sound was great as expected, and the added dynamics have cleaned up the mix quite a bit. Comment from the venue owner: what's that Christmas tree you got there? :lol:

 

Now for the fun part: I had a chance to play with the remote functions and made an interesting discovery. I was a little concerned about using wi-fi at a gig, since it would mean that either I use the venue's wireless or bring an access point with me, which is another piece of gear to worry about. So I pondered for a bit and realized I have an access point with me all the time: my iPhone!

 

I configured the personal hotspot and connected my laptop to it, then connected my iPad as well. I brought up SL Remote and it worked perfectly. The kicker is that Qmix worked on the iPhone also, and I was connected via USB to the laptop to keep the battery charged. I walked around the house to test the range and had no issues. The only potential drawback I can see is that the personal hotspot may be limited in the number of devices that can connect. I assume that any device that has hotspot function would work as well.

 

Fun stuff, I can't wait to put it all to use!

There's not one button that will enable all firewire returns on the mixer. However you can kind of swipe your finger across the buttons in one motion to quickly get them all turned on.

One of my bands is currently tossing up between the 16.4.2 and the 16.0.2, primarily for live use. We're currently a 2-piece, and experimenting with processing all of the acoustic drums in Ableton Live (similar to what Depeche Mode have been doing:

)

The prime motivator for me to get the 16.4.2 are the DB25 direct outs, as I imagine that it would be a bit of a worry for some front-of-house mixing engineers if we just hand over a stereo signal over XLR. Although I guess we could could alternatively get an XLR mic splitter (such as this: http://www.musiciansfriend.com/pro-audio/art-s8-8-channel-balanced-mic-splitter) and give the FOH the raw drum mic inputs at least, with the rest (stereo keys / stereo electronic drums / stereo samples / vocs) over a single stereo pair. That'd save a bit of cash :) and the smaller size of the 16.0.2 does appeal to me.

Has anyone had any experience with using this live in a variety of venues? Given my live experiences thus far, venues sound systems and the mixing 'engineers' using them vary greatly in quality. I'm just worried that if we're just handing out an entire processed mix it may compromise our sound in some of these venues.

I have a quick question about this board. I am interested in it mostly for recording, rather than for live purposes. I have two firepods currently but I am having a nightmare trying to get them to sync up together, even though both of them have the same firmware upgrades and both work individually. So I might just buy a StudioLive mixer which has more than 8 channels. Obviously, the first 8 channels are mono channels...then the next 4 are stereo channels...if you use the XLR mic preamp input of Channel 9/10, does it completly bypass the right TRS input? Or could I use the stereo channel, as the left being the XLR, and the right being the TRS? If I use the last 4 XLR inputs, does it make it so I cannot use the right  channel 1/8" jacks (so I can have 16 inputs to record instead of 12). Just curious!
