Good MIDI sound module that's cheapish?

Forgive me for intruding into your august company, when my native land is the Open Jam, but...

The keyboard player in my band has a Yamaha PSR-330, and some of her sounds aren't too cool.

Can you recommend a decent MIDI sound module that one might find used for $100 or less on Ebay, etc.?

We mainly need classic R&B and Rock & Roll sounds: piano, organ, vintage synth & string sounds...

Roland has a half-rack module called the JV-1010. Best sounds for the price, and you can put one of the JV expansion cards in it (even better sounds). The JV-1010 has been round for a while so you can prob find one on ebay. Simple knob functions but dont let that throw you off cuz it sounds better than any of those complicated half racks like the Korg X5DR.

PS. The best expansion card is the Keyboards of the 60's and 70's

Ridiculously usable sounds.

I've got a JV-1010 & love it. Great sounds right out if the box. It's only drawback is it's output level is generally low, and the level changes drastically between patches. It also has a bad habit of locking up.

I paid $200.00, which us probably about street value.

Roland Sound Canvases (Sound Canvasii?)

$49 SC-33 (I own one of these things. Not bad. Very lightweight. I used it to troubleshoot other people's midi gear for a long time.)

SC-55 $90 - $97

I own a JV-1010 and agree with what has been said. It is wonderful for its price. I only wish it had more expansion slots, like the XP-30, and that editing was easier, but such is life. :(

Oh yeah, and I'm selling one, but that's unrelated to my liking it. :o

Better than a Roland Sound Canvas to me, is any Yamaha MU module. Yamaha's XG set has more sounds & more effects than Roland's GS set.

They're more expensive - because they're worth it.

But they're more difficult to use too.

I own the MU90, similar to the one shown on this page.

Highly recommended - but no expansion.

The MU100 OTOH, I think can take 1 or 2 PLG cards.

Which is a very nice option to have. The guy I record with,

Peter Streit, owns two MU100's.

I still swear by XG. Call me old-fashioned.
