Members soundministries
Hey all, I'm beginning to search out grad schools and was wonderig if any of you have any thoughts or recomendations on where to look? At the moment I'm in contact with professors at Univ. of Arizona, Northern Arizona, and North Dakota and have emails of to Univ. of Wyoming and Kansas State. I'm taking lessons with the local college band director who is a phenomenal euphonium/tuba player to help me prepare for auditions. The main things I'm looking for are a real tuba instructor, an anticipated open TA postition for next year, and no GRE test. Thanks for any advice and help. Members sunburstbasser
Have you sent anything to UNC Greeley yet? They've got a really good program and aren't far away. Two of my professors got doctorates from Arizona U.
Members soundministries
I've been to UNC and know a lot of the profs there since I'm teaching in Colorado and I also sit on one of the state councils. Personally, UNC isn't for me, but yes I have looked into their program.
Members IndofunkCity
Grad school for music? Oh, wait, you're into pedagogy, right? Cuz basically that's the only reason one would go to grad school for music...
Members AntiStuff
My director, who is a tuba player, got his master's and doctorate at U of Cincinati.

Members crossways
I studied Euphonium and voice in college (I teach choir now). I got my MAed though. Tenessee Tech has a great Tuba guy, Winton Morris, however, I don't believe they have a master's in music. What are you doing Tuba performance? Members soundministries
Yes, looking at tuba performance, but am open to conducting as well. I've heard lots about the studio at Tenessee Tech and Morris, but I'm hoping to stay west of the Mississippi if I can. If plans go right, I'm heading to Flagstaff in a couple of weeks to visit the campus at NAU and get a lesson with Prof. Carichner and then I'll be in Tucson in January for their honor band (taking two of my students to attend) so I'll go ahead and audition there at that time. At this time I'm also looking at Colo. State and Kansas State so we'll see how my auditions go.
Members crossways
Doesn't the U of Col. have a pretty good school of music? There was agirl that I went to undergrad with who went out there for her master's. She's a choir person though.
Members soundministries
CU has a pretty good program from what I hear, but I really don't want to move to Boulder. I actually bought my Eb tuba from a grad student from CU this past summer.

Members soundministries
A friend who used to live in Boulder once described it as such: "Boulder, 20 square miles surrounded by reality!" I personally have nothing against Boulder, it's just not the place for me.
Members raucous
Got my Masters at USF in Tampa......can't beat it....beach is close by....fairly inexpensive tuition....don't let the GRE scare you....take the prep course.....
Members IndofunkCity
...or to learn Yeah, you can do that just as well (or better) without going to grad school though. The piece of paper is only really useful if you're going to write books or teach ....
Members slight-return
I dig boulder (did the 90s in boulder) the great thing about the "20 miles...surrounded by reality" is boulderites say that! -- ie it's usually the college sophomore that gets wrapped up in the crunchy "PRB" stuff [Wife went undergrad through PhD there, I was working in the technology sector] I mean, it has a crunchy side and it also is home to "Soldier of Fortune" magazine
