Not only can you sample/play PCM sounds on it, it also has AN synthesis for analog sounds and an FDSP engine for super crazy effects. The onboard effects are of very good quality as well.


I would say EX-7 over anything else listed on this thread really. There are tons of dark haunted sounding patches already out there for download on that thing.

is it basically an advanced DX-7?

The EX-7 is both nothing like a DX-7 and at the same time far more advanced.

 

The DX-7 ran on FM synthesis and uses no samples, nor can you sample with it.

 

The EX-7 has pre-recorded samples, allows you to sample and tweak your own stuff into it PLUS has a small virtual analog engine for creating analog-like patches to warm things up. It's cool because you can layer the VA stuff with the samples for really unique and crazy huge sounding patches.

 

The effects kick ass too.
