Members pexha
Back to keyman_sam's request... Here's a free program for Windows users. You can set it to disable your Web browser for however many hours you like. http://www.webjillion.com/archives/2005/08/01/free-software-temptation-blocker (I've found it sometimes unblocks programs a few hours too early.) We'd be honored to have you join us as well. dB And I'd be honored to have the sports threads contributers join the rest of the forum when we're discussing keyboards. The heaviest sports thread participants are here for sports first, judging from their lack of opinions on anything else. It's the first time I've seen anything like this. We've done a lot of OT before, but it's always been secondary to everyone's main reason for being here. And I don't want to blow this out of proportion because it's not a big deal to me, but it does feel like there's this forum within a forum going on with little interaction between the two. Members Dave Bryce
Originally posted by Allerian Respectfully, I find that very hard to believe. The sports threads are here because you made it clear that they were part of the culture that you had brought here from the KC board and that we were all to accept it. You've got a bunch of sports buddies and they're here with us. Actually, they're keyboard buddies who also enjoy sports. The sports threads are just one in a series of attempts to do things to try and make folks comfortable here. The comp CD was another one. I'm trying to get people to know each other on a number of different levels. I figured if we could reach a common ground on a few different levels, it might not be a bad thing. I understand that, but don't pretend that if I had a bunch of shooting buddies on this board that you'd allow threads comparing the virtues of different high-power rifles here in KSS. Ahhhhh, I love it when people who don't know me make assumptions about how I think. Maybe you should try asking...?Actually, as long as it was only one thread, and if there were others who were interested in it, I would have no problem with a rifle thread. As I've mentioned before, I'd prefer to stay away from politics and religion becuase I think they have the opposite effect - they tend to get nasty and can be polarizing. Also, the porno thing can get a bit dicey, so it'd probably be a good idea to stay away from that....but I'll try pretty much anything once.Bottom line - if it's something you enjoy and want to discuss with people here you consider friends - go ahead and try it. I do request that people not put up disingenuous OT threads just to see how far they can push, though....dB

As I may have mentioned, while I do have many more sports posts than synth posts here, I've been on synth forums for longer than many people here have been playing (rec.music.makers.synth, anyone?). I have a bachelors degree in music that encompassed music technology and audio engineering. I've worked for synth and synth software manufacturers (and still do). I have plenty to talk about regarding synths, and occasionally do so... when I feel I can make a viable contribution. As it is, most of my responses on synth threads would be as follows. - Yeah, that's true. - Me too. - +1 - That sounds cool. - Try an LFO and a slow filter. Anyway, point being: I am here as a synth player and MIDI programmer who also loves sports... not a sports fanatic who is randomly posting here instead of on a sports forum. Last point: nearly EVERY musician I work with is a sports lover. My drummer and I will often sit at the bar between sets to see what's going on in whatever game we're missing. My singer met my drummer in the hockey league they both play in. My point: the myth that musicians and athletes/sports lovers are mutually exclusive groups is purely that... a myth. Just my thoughts. YMMV. - Jeff

That's a bit harsh. I don't force anyone to read or participate in the sports threads any more than, say, the dUdE thread. I'll bet a bunch of people whould be upset if that was axed, though... Friends like to talk to each other about things they enjoy doing. I just don't see the harm in allowing that. I do appreciate your reply. As do I yours. I noticed that a number of you guys went to NAMM, an indication that there are music professionals in the sports threads. And I wasn't trying to be sarcastic or anything, but to hopefully invite you guys out of your cocoon and into the rest of the forum. I think that if you approached the on-topic discussions with the same passion as the sports topics, you'd find that you have a lot to say. And we'd all be better off because of it. Members mrcpro
I really don't have any suggestions, other than to remind people that they're in a keyboard forum first, and if keyboards aren't their first priority when they enter this forum, then they should move to a sports forum.I don't advocate shutting down the sports forums, because I like to throw my $.002 in once in awhile. I would encourage these folks to post on anything keyboard related, from Hammond, Rhodes & Hohner to composition, arrangement, production, and especially performance, which I suspect is where many of these guys are oriented. You could also try bumping non-synth threads yourself, with a pithy comment or two, in order to wet their whistle. I don't think any synth-oriented folks here would mind, I don't expect synth threads to vanish or anything. At least I don't feel threatened.
