thanks for anyone who can tell me, i'm taking lessons, and i've played it all sorts of wrong ways, but can't remember what the 'standard' progression is

Yeah, that's a pretty standard one. There are a few variations on that too, mostly with or without the IV chord in the 2nd measure, and with or without the V chord in the last bar. First, here's the simplest version, and then one with both the additional changes added:
