Members primativ
I know Ronson used a vox tone bender, but are their any other fuzzes that will get the same tone?
Members Sir H C
Think he also used a wah pedal set in one position to give that honk.
Members GCDEF
That sounds like cranked plexi tone to me, not fuzz.
Members elctmist
If you're looking for a reasonably cheap alternative I would try the Seymour Duncan Tweak Fuzz ($99). Use the "English Tea" setting in the manual and work from there. Otherwise there are loads of boutique tone bender clones. Edit: And yeah, you need the stuck wah to get that sound as well. Members elctmist
Oh yeah, and forumite Flying V 83 has a VINTAGE FX COLORDRIVE 2 for sale, which I believe is a tone bender clone, so that might be good alternative.
Members Sir H C
Ampwise he was using 200 watt Marshalls. Precursor to the Major, refered to as the Pig amps. Very simple controls 1 channel and loud.

Members primativ
How does the vox tonebender reissue from the 90's hold up against the originals?

Not so good, its more like the Velvet Underground "Sister Ray" tone than Ziggy (so still cool but different). AFAIK these pedals were actually originally made by Solasound in the UK, so you'd be better off looking for a Coloursound RI (Pro MKII) or clone. Agreed on ther Vox, the '90's RI has nothing to do with the original circuit and is very harsh, nasty and unusable. Ronson used the Sola Sound Tonebender Mk. II, it was the last two-knobbed Tonebender in the hammerite case, predated the Colorsound. Not as dark sounding or as saturated as the Colorsound. Pro Analog, MJM and others make clones. But unless you have the cranked Marshall and LP to go with it, the pedal itself may not get you there. It is one element to the tone, and you might want to search for soemthing that will get you a combination of the amp, fuzz, etc. in one button. I used to use a stationary-cocked wah and a green Big Muff Pi with a clean amp for a similar tone. Not necessarily recommending it for exact tone, but it was close enough for live rock'n'roll. -Y. Members primativ
Thanks for the info. Would a treble booster have the same effect as the cocked wah? I don't have a wah currently but I just got a hbe germania treble booster.

Members tedzepplin
www.Pedaldoctor.com has a pedal that nails the Bowie Rebel Rebel sound. The four-Speed Overdrive.
