Members losergeek Posted November 2, 2005 Members Posted November 2, 2005 Thinking Downward Spiral/Broken records by NIN. Slightly synthetic sounded perhaps. What would you use to get a totally thick, ugly, in yer face distortion? Alex
Members box handler Posted November 2, 2005 Members Posted November 2, 2005 I know you've heard a Big Muff before...
Members palthegiraffe Posted November 2, 2005 Members Posted November 2, 2005 Boss FZ-2, in the "Mode II" setting.
Members rydia is hot Posted November 2, 2005 Members Posted November 2, 2005 i'm pretty sure i read that a lot of NIN tones may have been recorded direct...guitar > dirt pedal > board. this would definately be nasty sounding...
Members themeanreds Posted November 2, 2005 Members Posted November 2, 2005 Roland Bee Baa or copy thereof
Members losergeek Posted November 2, 2005 Author Members Posted November 2, 2005 Originally posted by box handler I know you've heard a Big Muff before... True, but muff's don't sound as "sharp" to me? No explosive low end with plam muting, etc. thanks for the othe suggestions Alex
Members squareking Posted November 2, 2005 Members Posted November 2, 2005 Holowon Static Egg might get you there. I was thinking the same thing last night, kinda like 'Into the Void', but that's more synthy that anything.
Members Sir H C Posted November 2, 2005 Members Posted November 2, 2005 To me sharp and thick are two different sounds. Trying to do both with one distortion takes up too much "space" in the mix and might sound great on its own but in a band loses a lot. So for sharp, Maestro FZ-1S, Ibanez Standard Fuzz, Rosac Nu-Fuzz (or Distortion Blender), and Shin-ei FY-2.
Members ck3 Posted November 2, 2005 Members Posted November 2, 2005 How about that MMFX Fender Bender that you just scored??? If it's not up to snuff, then one of the official Fender RIs of the Blender may be better suited for the din you crave ... or, perhaps, an Uglyface.
Members losergeek Posted November 2, 2005 Author Members Posted November 2, 2005 The bender is great for the massive wall of fuzz sound; I'm looking for something tighter I think. I dunno. Maybe an EQ pedal or something. Alex

Members Boron Posted November 3, 2005 Members Posted November 3, 2005 I'd go for an Ibanez standard fuzz with something boosting it a little (for even more aggro) or even a dano french toast - those things can sound like HELL. m/:evil: m/
Members BmoreTele Posted November 3, 2005 Members Posted November 3, 2005 The Bennett Lowball - "kills low flying birds" "demolishes small buildings" Big, loud, sharp, does chords, loves drop tunings, hideous orange box and day glo green lettering, and I have one again!
Members Blungo Posted November 3, 2005 Members Posted November 3, 2005 MIght i suggest a Sirkut Electronics ring mod into a Bee-Baa or BB-1?
Members Fourth Floor Posted November 3, 2005 Members Posted November 3, 2005 Originally posted by AngelofHop My thoughts exactly.Fuzz (muff, FZ2, fuzz factory, take yr pick) with the Machine will get you hurty tones like NIN.We all need hurty tones sometimes.
Members ScreamCage Posted November 3, 2005 Members Posted November 3, 2005 if you're looking for something really sharp, i would suggest the Rectified Zombie Distortion by Rocktron. if you want something seriously nasty/crappy, go for the Rogue DST-5 (15 bucks of pure crap). or if you want something crazy/nasty, but still really cool, go for the Fender Blender. you could always research what pedals NIN used for that era. oh, and the Zvex Machine, and the Death By Audio Supersonic Fuzz Gun and Soundwave Breakdown might do the trick...but definitely not all at the same time *turns white at the thought*...
Members FLYING V 83 Posted November 3, 2005 Members Posted November 3, 2005 Go to GC and buy the new Dano Metal mini for $15. Pure crap. You'll love it.
Members THeLoveGun Posted July 8, 2006 Members Posted July 8, 2006 yeah, simply pocket out $$$ for a machine...followed by the fuzz fact. I keep the settings @ 8oclock and voila...its more percussive piece of solid metal being dragged and scraped through the ground going at 500 miles per hour... probly the most interesting texture I've heard in a while. I've also discovere a really cheaper way of doing things by having a chain of the following: fuzz factory>Digitech Grunge>E13 Sodameiser its not a wall of fuzz, its a fuxxing typhoon of fuzz...the way each pedal contribute their best elements...I get addicted and just shove my ears beside the amp...literally... that or the machine in ff...I love them, because you're really asking yourself "why am I doing this? what the crap is wrong with my guitar?" yes...those type of questions.
Members Lord Chelmsford Posted July 8, 2006 Members Posted July 8, 2006 Fuzz Factory and Machine for me. Heard, too, that the old DOD Buzzbox (I think it's called) was nasty - in a good way.
Members psychopractor Posted July 8, 2006 Members Posted July 8, 2006 zvex machine ---> DOD Buzz Box --> EHX Freq Analyzer --> Metal Zone --> Straight into the board!! edit:or just pick any two from the chain. I think any combination would result in madness.edit 2:actually substitute the metal zone for a DOD Grunge/Death Metal.
