A 51-year-old Omaha man died Thursday night following a motorcycle-car collision near the intersection of 65th Street and Sorensen Parkway.

James Frost died at the Creighton University Medical Center, said Officer Jeff Warnock.

Sgt. Susan Drickey said both vehicles were in westbound lanes on Sorensen Parkway when the motorcycle moved from the outside lane to the curb lane and hit the rear end of an Oldsmobile Cutlass.

Witnesses told police that the Cutlass, driven by 55-year-old Delmar Givehand of Omaha, was backing up at the time of the accident.

Givehand did not require medical attention.

Frost was wearing a helmet.

The accident, which occurred about 4:45 p.m., caused officers to detour traffic off Sorensen Parkway between 63rd and 68th Streets through the evening rush hour.

James "Greg" Frost rode motorcycles for more than three decades, always taking safety precautions on Omaha's roads.

He wore a helmet, boots and long pants. On the road, he remained "very alert about what was going on" around him, said his wife, Micki.

"That's why this is such a shock."

Frost, 51, died Thursday night when his motorcycle collided with the back of an Oldsmobile Cutlass driven by Delmar Givehand, 55. Both vehicles were traveling in the westbound lanes of Sorensen Parkway near the 65th Street intersection. Witnesses said Givehand's vehicle was backing up.

Omaha police are investigating.

Ryan Frost said his father was a Harley Davidson rider. He got his first motorcycle on his 18th birthday, when his mother no longer could stop him from riding, Ryan said.

Greg Frost grew up in Carter Lake. He loved to work with his hands, Ryan said, and became a machinist after finishing school.

Greg and Micki met in their early 20s. Micki said she saw Greg at a local bar and thought he was "gorgeous," too gorgeous to be single and interested in her, she said.

"I was wrong."

The two married and, over the next 25 years, raised two children, Ryan, 24, and daughter Jamie, 21, in Omaha.

Much of their family life centered on ice hockey. Greg played defense twice a week for the BPHL, or the Beer and Pretzel Hockey League. He also worked as a referee and, when Ryan was young, coached his son's teams.

Micki described her husband as "a family-first kind of guy."

"He has a truck that is 12 years old, and that was fine with him, because we needed other things."

Last Sunday, the couple brought their family together to celebrate Greg's birthday.

"This was a good part of our marriage," Micki said. "We had fun together."
