"...Occasionally, an attempt is made to inject a melody or semblance of structure into the mix, but these are soon stomped on by the guitar torturing that dominates the sound..."

From a review of his album.

that's jrak, huh? he was before my time i believe. hear lots about him though and i've gotta say, that is one of the most offensive and painful to look at pictures i've ever seen. looks like someones kept him trapped in a dark place and forced him to live on nothing but cherry jell-o for months.

Can I see a poll version of this thread with the consensus responses as given answers along with an "other" option?

Considering volume and quality of work as well as originality, here's my suggested pantheon of legends to be voted for (at least a start anyway):

Lennon
Roger Waters
Townshend
Neil Young

Others worth considering:

Lou Reed
Zappa
David Byrne
Tom Petty
Brian Wilson
Bob Dylan

John Lennon and Paul McCartney
Donald Fagen and Walter Becker
Andy Partridge
Jimmy Webb (but not MacArthur Park)
Billy Joel (prior to We Didn't Start the Fire)
Stevie Wonder (prior to "I Just Called to Say I Love You")
Prince

Then, of course

Antonio Carlos Jobim
Hoagy Carmichael
Cole Porter
George & Ira Gershwin
Harold Arlen and E.Y. Harburg
