I've never really thought of The Cult and Gene Loves Jezebel as Goth bands (even when they were kind of considered to be Goth - ish).

"Promise" is a great record and the ones that came after were also pretty good. "Kiss of Life" def. has it's moments and the Mick Aston-less records also keep to the same vibe. They kind of took on the LA band lost rock star thing in the 90's - but they still had the talent and drive to keep it going - I still like them a lot - The Mick Aston stuff? Uninspired to say the least. Kind of stinky if you ask me.

THE CULT still rules. "Love" was undoubtably their high point (mixing psychedelia, Led Zep, and Goth) but every (EVERY) record since then still rocks. I was so put off when "Electric" came out that I almost gave them up - but they soldiered on and their last one "Beyond Good and Evil" is pretty damn great and really stands up to repeated listening. They def. aren't Goth anymore, but they still keep putting out compelling, dark music.

You have to give The Cure some respect for "Pornography", "Disintergration" (the most appropriate title of all time), and the last record in the trilogy "Blood Flowers". All are just astounding. "Distintegration" is one of the best rock (Goth, whatever) records ever. The only time that I can't dig The Cure is when RS drifts into pop territory. I hate that stuff - twee and weak.

"Wish" had some great Goth-y moments - but "Friday I'm In Love" nearly killed it for me and The Cure. Awful, awful song.

Goth is less about music than it is (or was) about style and vibe. GLJ had it for a while; The Cure (when they are on) still have it.

(BTW - The first two Clan of Xymox records still hold up amazingly - Goth to say the least - ).
