i had one, didn't experience too much of a volume drop. got plenty loud when it was dimed.

 

as far as the octave fuzz - it sounds good. very muddy though. good for single notes or sludge, but not great for chording. I loved the low setting without the boost on. nice fuzzy quasi acoustic sound.

Can it get those really wild octaved sounds, or is the octave effect not very prominent?

If you play higher up on the neck it gets them, but any low notes sound real muddy & dissonant. If you listen to the breakdown on Bullet with Butterfly Wings (the part during/after 'jesus was the only son for you') you can hear what i mean about the muddiness.
