$200 is a little high for a DM-100 IMO. Ours was $125.

As far as filters go there's a lot of them. Check out the Frostwave Resonator, Moog MF-101 for a start. I'd avoid the Akai and Electrix models, too vanilla.

As far as portable synths with VCOs go, I've got two questions for you.

a) What do you call portable?

b) Why do you think you need VCOs?

Portable indicates you want to gig it, VCOs indicate it'll be old and probably not reliable enough to gig, unless you spend a packet on regular maintenance. Seriously check out the Alesis Ion and Micron, they both do vintage sounds a lot better than most VAs and are cheap and reliable enough for gigging.

You need a:

-- BBD based delay unit

-- analog phaser

-- good reverb unit

Synth can be
any vintage
analog with VCO's and fast hardware envelopes. Doesn't matter which one.

What about a Nord Lead 2X or an Alesis ION instead of vintage synth?

The Boss DM-300 is nice, another great and cheap alternative is the Yamaha e1005/e1010 analog delay, glowing reviews all around and they can be had cheaply,I think they are a steal.

The Yamahas actually sound much better to my ears. We own both a DM-100 and an E1010.
