Would it be easy to build a low-pass filter?

Has anyone tried this? I would like to have a simple LPF, like one in a high-quality console's channel strip, so that i can route my guitar signal through a couple different effects chains and have one of the chains only process low notes*.

(*I think this is possible with an LPF, right? I don't want just a tone knob that cuts down on harmonics but still lets all the notes through. I want to make it so that like only the first octave and a half on my guitar get through to those effects. Maybe i would need a strong LPF and a gate to make this happen?)

I don't want any envelope or sweeping. I just want a straight-up low-pass filter where i can set the cutoff frequency, maybe with a q control.

Has anyone done this or know of a good DIY kit i can buy?
