Members uvacom-rotatt
The old Juno 60/juno 106 sound issue has been around for a long time. I'm sure there are differences but when I listen to the Juno 60 demos on youtube I would have no problem believing it's a 106 if I wasn't told otherwise. Does anybody know of any A/B comparisons with the same patch settings?
Members Chando
When you have a basic SUB-OSC sound with chorus II on. both sound very different. Juno 6/60 sounds like the Mr. Fingers bassline. 106 does not. Lacks a certain bite or edge.

Members uvacom-rotatt
Both great records, but the Juno 106 does great bass too. Maybe it doesn't sound like that. I'm not defending the 106 and I do believe they sound different. I'd just like to hear them side by side with the same settings.
Members Fine_Young_Fool
I am mainly interested in doing fairly basic sounds, ala LCD Soundsystem. The R3 just has a bunch of things like Mod Seuences, a Vocoder, and Formant Motion and all of this stuff that I don't feel that I need. Any opinions on the SH-201? Members Chando
I am mainly interested in doing fairly basic sounds, ala LCD Soundsystem. Get a Moog, specifically track down a Rogue or MG-1 and figure out a way to sync it up to midi.
Members Chando
Or a Taurus II without the pedals. The 201 is nice. But if simple and beefy is what you really want. You should go analog first. Specifically a Moog or Arp because they rip(Odyssey wouldu be great but a cheaper moog might be more practical) . Then maybe add a cheapish japanese polysynth (analog, digital, hybrid, etc).
Members shaft9000
looks like you should save up for a little phatty...would be perfect jump-off point for you
Members Chando
yeah, I'd say save up for the Little Phatty, but keep your eyes open for deals on the other cheap moogs. Usually when you're not desperate for a deal is when you actually find one. LCD Soundsystem uses a Moog Taurus II without the pedals, which is basically a Moog Rogue

Members NashSG
It all depends on what you want to do. If you are wanting to be able to play some synth in a band either laying down some pads or playing some bass lines, it would probably be OK. If you are looking for a ton of sounds to do full midi production, obviously the Juno 60 is not going to be able to do it all, but what it does, it does well. If you are getting started programming, the interface on the Juno's is really simple and good. Going from my experience, I tried going for things way over my head when I started like a Kawai K5000. That kind of synthesis structure was way over me when I was starting and other than really messing with filters, I never really could make anything. Killer synth and with someone who really understands its structure, you can make killer sounds. For me, I get more out of simpler synths that sound good, but I like more retro sounding stuff. Members jjdugan3
Yeah, I have a love/hate with my 60,I also feel the same way about my utilitarian Swiss Army knife. It's not the most exciting synth in my collection, but I can always count on it.Despite my feelings I want to invest more in it by getting one of the dcb/midi kits. I'll never sell it either. Members Chando
That's why I make sure most of my friends have a 6/60 laying around.. don't want one but want one to be around at all times. uvacomm - that kicks ass. The "landlord" piano sample. Classic. Ironically would work better in a mix with James "cool" influences better than his own music. Seriously, almost every DFA record sounds like a ESG song but if you made it white, long and boring. Sounds impossible but they somehow did it. Members Fine_Young_Fool
I think a Moog may be a little far out of the price range at the moment. I'm looking for something pretty versatile, but mainly that LCD sound. I don't need it to do any ultra-modern trance/techno/whatever you call it stuff. Members Chando
Hmmm .. how much you got to spend? Are you planning on selling the R3? Rogue's and MG-1's are not that pricey. Just a little more than they used to. edit: actually - I can't even think of the last time I saw a Rogue for sale.

Members jjdugan3
I believe the MicroKorg or the Alesis Ion might be a good start,If you want a real analog go for the 60. DSI has some interesting selections as well. There is a host of viable low/midrange analogs daily on Craigslist. Here is a database of synths...go forth.http://www.vintagesynth.com
Members jjdugan3
Here are the "hidden"modes(copied from elsewhere) for KSS posterity:JUNO 60 TESTINGMODE Fire the Juno up with the KEYTRANSPOSE button pressed. Now you're in testmode.Testmode let you have three different keyassign modes. You select assign modewith the arpeggio mode-switch.If the arpeggio mode-switch is: UP - mono mode. All 6 voices are assigned to the lastest key pressed. Very fatindeed. UP/DOWN - rotary mode. First key pressed will use for instance voice 1, theynext key will use voice 2 and so on. If you now keep 4 keys pressed andreleases three of them next key will be assigned to voice 5. Voices are alwaysassigned in number order but the first key doesn't always assign voice 1. Ifyou keep one key down, that voice will not be assigned until you release thiskey. I believe this is the same mode as used in Korg PolySix. DOWN - non-rotary mode. First key pressed will use for instance voice 1, theynext key will use voice 2 and so on. If you now keep 4 keys pressed andreleases three of them next key will be assigned to voice 1. Voices are alwaysassigned to the voice available with the smallest number. I don't know how the normal keyassign mode differs from the rotary mode above.According to the service manual the voices are assigned in "cyclic manner" andthe 7th key pressed steals the 1th voice. This sounds very much like therotary mode but I might be wrong. Then the manual says there are "three more"key assign modes using the test mode described above. Anyway, there are atleast three modes. In testmode HOLD button will work as normal. Arpeggio will also work. OK, now for the programs 80 to 98. Put a cord into the PATCH SHIFT connector. The cord should be non-connected on the other side. Now you can access thetestprograms 80-98 in the normal fashion. Keep 5 down and press 3 for bank 8.Try program 85 in monomode and you're getting a nice clavinet type sound.Program 98 is called 0FFH according to the service manual, is sounds great.Note that these programs are for testing the synth so some of them will not_sound_ at all. Members Chando
What LCD songs pop in your mind when you think of the sounds you want?
Members Fine_Young_Fool
Just all of them. They aren't that much different than eachother. Disco Infiltrator, Someone Great, North American Scum, Beat Connection, Tribulations, you know. The reason I am thinking SH-201 is because it has plenty of EGs, LFOs, Oscillators and that. And it was designed to replicate 80s synths, which are the kinds of sounds I am mainly going for anyway. I also like the synth sounds that Pulp uses, and I know those are from 80s synths. Members Stabby
SH-201 is pretty good but only 32 user patches is ridiculous.
Members Fine_Young_Fool
I agree with you there. What about a Korg Mono/Poly? Seems pretty cool. I was using the synth finder on vintagesynth.com and it came up.
