It can work to some extent, on some amps. Except I use a 100K :wave:

 

Its just like having a second master volume, and makes it less touchy to ballence out.

 

But as far as crank way up and all that, naw...

It adds more series resistance after the amp's own master, which in itself can dull the tone a bit. It also reduces some of the "spikey" transients at lower volumes which smooths the sound out. However, it's just a second master, and it's not useful for a lot of amps whose circuits are already designed well.
