Members gilwe
OK once in a while I come in to ask the same question - which set of cards should I use in my 2080 ? I ask again as now I have extra cards so... OK what I currently have in hand are: Piano Super Sound Set Session Experience Pop Hip Hop Techno Drums and Bass Orchestral I Orchestral II Vintage Synth I know many of them share the same sounds, what is your suggestion please so I get the widest palette of samples ? Members RolyMac
Depends what you want to do with your JV, if you want to minimise similar sounding samples, probably take out the experience board, the pop board and either the Hip Hop or Drum and Bass boards as these last two have a lot of loops on them. If your happy with the strings on Orch I and don't need bagpipes , Titanic soundtrack or Enya choirs then don't use Orch II. But you definitely need the Vintage Synth and Orchestral I board lol. Members TechEverlasting
My personal favorites are the Vintage Synth, Keyboards of the 60s and 70s and World. If you're interested in Orchestral emulation I think you need both Orch 1 and 2, because some of the strings and brass in the Orch 1 card are really weak. You can create some nice ensembles layering elements from both Orchestra cards.
Members Spleencage
"Dance" card if you can find it, It got yanked because of copyright infringement. Also the FX board is very useful- I forget what its called, its loosely based on Distorted Reality
Members Meriphew
probably take out the experience board Yes. The Experience board is mostly filled with crap anyways.

Members poumtschak
Yes. The Experience board is mostly filled with crap anyways. The Experience SR-JV80-99 and SR-JV80-98 boards are *demo* boards, like 1MB instead of 4MB, and featuring waveforms picked in other cards, with fewer multi-samples. Roland used to give them for free, so you have what you pay for.

Members TechEverlasting
I found the "Pop" board to be completely useless. Just a bunch of generic nylon guitar, electric piano and brass patches, most of which had better counterparts already in the JV's ROM. Keys of the 60s and 70s is a great counterpart to the Vintage Synth card, and the World board has some interesting waveforms as well.

You are not considering when and for what instrument the Pop board was produced. The Pop board came out 1992, right after the JV-80 came out in 1991, and was produced to be an add-on to the JV-80/880 waveforms - not the subsequent JV-1080/2080/ etc that came out later and had many more waveforms in their ROMs, including the ones in the Pop board. If you look at the waveforms of the JV-80, you will find that the Pop board offered many other alternative waveforms that were not present on the JV-80/880 - These are the 129 waveforms on the JV-80/880: 1 Ac Piano 12 SA Rhodes 13 SA Rhodes 24 E.Piano 15 E.Piano 26 Clav 17 Organ 18 Jazz Organ9 Pipe Organ10 Nylon GTR11 6STR GTR12 GTR HARM13 Mute GTR 114 Pop Strat15 Stratus16 SYN GTR17 Harp 118 SYN Bass19 Pick Bass20 E.Bass21 Fretless 122 Upright BS23 Slap Bass 124 Slap & Pop25 Slap Bass 226 Slap Bass 327 Flute 128 Trumpet 129 Trombone 130 Harmon Mute131 Alto Sax 132 Tenor Sax 133 French 134 Blow Pipe35 Bottle36 Trumpet SECT37 ST.Strings - R38 ST.Strings - L39 Mono Strings40 Pizz41 SYN VOX 142 SYN VOX 243 Male Ooh44 ORG VOX45 VOX Noise46 Soft Pad47 JP Strings48 Pop Voice49 Fine Wine50 Fantasynth51 Fanta Bell52 ORG Bell53 Agogo54 Bottle Hit55 Vlbes56 Marimba wave57 Log Drum58 DIGI Bell 159 DIGI Chime60 Steel Drums61 MMM VOX62 Spark VOX63 Wave Scan64 Wire String65 Lead Wave66 Synth Saw 167 Synth Saw 268 Synth Saw 369 Synth Square70 Synth Pulse171 Synth Pulse272 Triangle73 Sine74 ORG Click75 White Noise76 Wlnd Agogo77 Metal Wlnd78 Feedbackvvave79 Anklungs80 Wind Chimes81 Rattles82 Tin Wave83 Spectrum 184 808 SNR 185 90's Snare86 Piccolo SN87 LA Snare88 Whack Snare89 Rim Shot90 Bright Kick91 Verb Kick92 Round Kick93 808 Kick94 Closed HAT 195 Closed HAT 296 Open HAT 197 Crash 198 Ride 199 Ride Bell 1100 Power Tom Hi101 Power Tom Lo102 Cross Stick1103 808 Claps104 Cowbell 1105 Tambourine106 Timbale107 CGA Mute Hi108 CGA Mute Lo109 CGA Slap110 Conga Hi111 Conga Lo112 Maracas113 Cabasa Cut114 Cabasa Up115 Cabasa Down116 REV Steel DR117 REV Tin Wave118 REV SN 1119 REV SN 2120 REV SN 3121 REV SN 4122 REV Kick 1123 REV Cup124 REV Tom125 REV Cow Bell126 REV TAMB127 REV Conga128 REV Maracas129 REV Crash 1 and these are the 224 waveforms on the SR-JV80-01 Pop expansion board: 1 Grand sft 1A2 Grand sft 1B3 Grand sft 1C4 Grand hrd 1A5 Grand hrd 1B6 Grand hrd 1C7 E.Grand 28 Wurly soft A9 Wurly soft B10 Wurly soft C11 Wurly hard A12 Wurly hard B13 Wurly hard C14 E.Piano 3A15 E.Piano 3B16 E.Piano 3C17 Clav 2A18 Clav 2B19 Clav 2c20 Clav 3A21 Clav 3B22 Clav 3C23 Clav 4A24 Clav 4B25 Clav 4C26 Jazz Organ 227 Ballad Organ28 Even Bars29 8ft Stop30 Mad Organ A31 Med Organ B32 Mad Organ C33 60's Organ 134 60's Organ 235 60's Organ 336 60's Organ 437 Celeste38 Music Box39 Jazz Bass 140 Jazz Bass 241 P. Members Dr.Wu
the bass and drum board has by far the best sounding basses ever released on a romcard. if you use the jv for bass its a definete keeper

Members TechEverlasting
Paolo, thank you for the detailed response, but I actually was considering when and for what instrument the Pop board was produced. Gilwe asked what boards he should put in a 2080. As your post makes clear it doesn't make much sense to put a Pop board in there.
Members gilwe
Yep. Bass are a nice complementary. I do need the 60s/70s card though. So here's what I currently have... Maybe I should ditch the Techno and put the Pop instead ? Members Mourndark
"Dance" card if you can find it, It got yanked because of copyright infringement. I love mine - the drums are great, as are the hits and stabs, and just about every 90's dance hit is represented there in some form (apart from Insomnia, weirdly). The drum loops are a bit cheesy, and the less said about the voice samples the better. The Vintage card is great too, and the 60s+70s one is great for boosting the rather lacking organs. Members poumtschak
As your post makes clear it doesn't make much sense to put a Pop board in there. The Session expansion board is to the JV-1080 line what the Pop board was to the 80/880/90/1000 series : better all-rounder waveforms than the stock ones. Dance card : yes, the x0x drums are okay, yet a bit sterile compared to what you could get from a sampler. It lacks a decent 808 though. But it's much better than the Techno board, which has IMHO overprocessed and harsh waveforms, that made it all through the JV-1080 engine based Grooveboxes line after that. The Hip-Hop card actually has some interesting drums, loops and bass waveforms.
