OK once in a while I come in to ask the same question - which set of cards should I use in my 2080 ? I ask again as now I have extra cards so... :thu:

OK what I currently have in hand are:

Piano

Super Sound Set

Session

Experience

Pop

Hip Hop

Techno

Drums and Bass

Orchestral I

Orchestral II

Vintage Synth

I know many of them share the same sounds, what is your suggestion please so I get the widest palette of samples ?

Depends what you want to do with your JV, if you want to minimise similar sounding samples, probably take out the experience board, the pop board and either the Hip Hop or Drum and Bass boards as these last two have a lot of loops on them. If your happy with the strings on Orch I and don't need bagpipes , Titanic soundtrack or Enya choirs then don't use Orch II. But you definitely need the Vintage Synth and Orchestral I board lol.:thu:

My personal favorites are the Vintage Synth, Keyboards of the 60s and 70s and World. If you're interested in Orchestral emulation I think you need both Orch 1 and 2, because some of the strings and brass in the Orch 1 card are really weak. You can create some nice ensembles layering elements from both Orchestra cards.

ok this is my current set up:

Piano

Super Sound Set

Session

Techno

Orchestral I

Orchestral II

Vintage Synth

Bass/Drums

Should I replace Bass/Drums with Pop ?

I have all "General Midi"/Synth/Strings sound already on the other boards...

What do you think ?

Yes. The Experience board is mostly filled with crap anyways.

The Experience SR-JV80-99 and SR-JV80-98 boards are *demo* boards, like 1MB instead of 4MB, and featuring waveforms picked in other cards, with fewer multi-samples.

Roland used to give them for free, so you have what you pay for. :p

I found the "Pop" board to be completely useless. Just a bunch of generic nylon guitar, electric piano and brass patches, most of which had better counterparts already in the JV's ROM. Keys of the 60s and 70s is a great counterpart to the Vintage Synth card, and the World board has some interesting waveforms as well.

You are not considering when and for what instrument the Pop board was produced. The Pop board came out 1992, right after the JV-80 came out in 1991, and was produced to be an add-on to the JV-80/880 waveforms - not the subsequent JV-1080/2080/ etc that came out later and had many more waveforms in their ROMs, including the ones in the Pop board.

If you look at the waveforms of the JV-80, you will find that the Pop board offered many other alternative waveforms that were not present on the JV-80/880 -

Yep. Bass are a nice complementary. I do need the 60s/70s card though.

So here's what I currently have... Maybe I should ditch the Techno and put the Pop instead ?

Piano

Super Sound Set

Session

Techno

Orchestral I

Orchestral II

Vintage Synth

Bass/Drums

"Dance" card if you can find it, It got yanked because of copyright infringement.

I love mine - the drums are great, as are the hits and stabs, and just about every 90's dance hit is represented there in some form (apart from Insomnia, weirdly). The drum loops are a bit cheesy, and the less said about the voice samples the better.

The Vintage card is great too, and the 60s+70s one is great for boosting the rather lacking organs.

As your post makes clear it doesn't make much sense to put a Pop board in there.

The Session expansion board is to the JV-1080 line what the Pop board was to the 80/880/90/1000 series : better all-rounder waveforms than the stock ones.

Dance card : yes, the x0x drums are okay, yet a bit sterile compared to what you could get from a sampler. It lacks a decent 808 though. But it's much better than the Techno board, which has IMHO overprocessed and harsh waveforms, that made it all through the JV-1080 engine based Grooveboxes line after that.

The Hip-Hop card actually has some interesting drums, loops and bass waveforms.

:blah:
