is 12AU7 a straight swap for 12Ax7?

It IS true that it will lower gain. The point is, will it lower it too much? In most amp situations it will. The only time I've seen 12AU7s work in guitar amps or pedals is in EXTREMELY overdriven stages.

Maybe I should look again, but I'm pretty sure my Univox 1226 is full of them.

Maybe, but then the question becomes, was the amp designed to use 12AU7s? If so, that's an entirely situation than putting 12aU7s in an amp designed to use 12AX7s.

1. At 20% of the gain of a 12AX7, a 12AU7 in an amp with a single 12AX7 in the gain stage will probably not not even be useable.

2. I clearly do not charge enough for my NOS tubes. I was selling vintage 50's blackplate 12AU7's for $18 each new.........

I sure could have used your advice earlier, I e-mailed you but never got an answer. I called the Tube Store but the guy on phone hadn't a {censored}ing clue what a Marshall DSL was; I ended up getting 4 Tung Sol 12AX7's from the Tube Depot and 2 of the 4 were bad.
