Members GuitarHitman
How do these compare? I've got an idea how EL34s and 6L6s compare but not EL84s.
Members PGS412
I dig all of them! The EL84's can be comparable more to the EL34, but they dont have that (EL34) midrange in them, and they tend to only get their good characteristics coming through when they are really pushed... then it's

Members The Boogie Man
If you think of 6V6's as small 6L6's then you can think of EL84's as small EL34's. Although I'm a Fender guy, I'm not a big fan of 6V6's which many Fender amps use, but like the EL 84's better. And would rather have a amp with 6L6's than the same amp with EL 34's. Members champster
To me, EL84s are too limited in tonal range. Prefer 6L6s, but that's just me.
Members The Evil Dr. X
I really dig EL84 amps.... they have a nice chimey top end to them Actually, an EF86 pre amp and EL84 power section is Tone of teh Gods ! !
Members mamberg
I have a 60W Marshall with EL34's, and thought it sounded great. but then I got a modded Valve Jr., with it's EL84, and I was blown away. maybe I never pushed the EL34's hard enough (probably true), but the EL84's were the first time I experienced the 'chimey' tone firsthand. awesome also, palm mutes through the EL84's were also much more 'brewtal' than the Marshall, which I totally attribute to the EL34's not being pushed hard enough. needless to say, for the levels I am running at (loud bedroom level), I am very happy with the EL84's.
