Members kwyn
My Nord Electro 3 says that the headphone jack (stereo out) runs hotter than the other outputs. What does "hotter" mean?
Members pogo97
It outputs a higher voltage = louder signal = "hotter output"
Members kwyn
So does that affect the sound quality at all or just volume?
Members SpaceNorman
Technically - it only affects the volume. However if whatever amplication your using has trouble dealing with the "hotter" signal - you may find that it clips the input channel which will affect the quality of your sound. Two of my keyboards have both 1/4" TRS (balanced) outputs AND balanced XLR outputs. Unfortunately, the balanced XLR outputs are so hot that even with the input gain on the channel strip of my mixer (Yamaha MG12/4FX) - it still overdrives the channel strip. I ended up going back to using the 1/4" TRS outputs and no longer have that issue.
Members Purity_Control
Conversely, if your outputs are not hot enough or you don't amp it up asap you will get a {censored}ty signal to noise ratio. Unless there's a compelling reason to do otherwise, run everything as hot as you can without clipping.
