If I openly admit that I actually prefer...

There are indeed lots of things that analogues can do that VAs can't, sonically. But, I produce EBM, Aggrotech, Electro-Industrial and so, for my needs, VAs are my favorite choice. The ones I'm fond of just have a slightly more digital sound, and that's exactly the way I like it.

For other types of music, I do prefer analogues, but my heart belongs to aggrotech in the same vein as Velvet Acid Christ, Combichrist, Funker Vogt, Grendel, Cenobita, Wumpscut, etc etc.

I have no idea what any of those bands are, so I'll have to agree with you. I guess I need to either get out me, pull my head out of Tony Banks' ass, or maybe get out more. Aw, who am I kidding? My head is very happy inside Tony Banks' ass.

Not being an expert on all VA's, I only have experience with a few. The last one I played at a local resale shop was the Korg MS-2000B. Hated it. No guts whatsoever. It does cool stuff. Just doesn't sound good. Especially when one's head is up Tony Banks' ass.

Well, VAC is a known gearhead, which means anything's game, whether its an iPad synth or a modular analog.

Dunno about the others, and the Google is unhelpful other than a really old interview with Wumpscut from 1997. (Aggrotech is a perfect genre for wavetable, and back then Wumpscut seemed big on the Microwave 1 (and sampling / Kurzweil along with analog bass stuff). Times have changed a lot from then... :idk:)

i pulled the Jupiter-6 out of my rig and put the JP-8000 in its place so i'm really getting a kick out of these replies.

Other one? :confused::facepalm:

I hope this is an alt of the op. Mods have some cleaning up to do either way. I am going back to gear slutz, they don't let trash to get on their boards.

Analog vs digital is settled. Analog won. Deal with it. :deadhorse:

Heresy! My MS2000Br is one of my absolute favorite VAs EVAR. It has guts, but you really have to coax 'warm fuzzies' out of it - but it can be done. I use that particular synth the most in my original recordings as it has that digital sound I referenced earlier. Works perfect for my needs. Coming in at a close second is my Nord Lead 2x. Not quite as digital sounding, definitely more 'warm', if not a little bright sometimes, and cuts through the mix well.

I guess this just proves that VAs vs Analogue, as well as VAs vs VAs is all subjective. What some people find to sound bad, others might feel sounds really good. Case in point - MS2k.

Go back to play random supersaw runs accross your crappy plastic digital keyboards, we go back to making real music. Maybe some day your ears will finally open... Use headphones until that day.

Currently, I'm having fun in a synth rockish sort of project, where I'm mixing mostly Andromeda and Omnisphere sounds.

I do, however, have Synth1 and Superwave P8 on that laptop. I should perform a song with those synths. Since the A6 is the MIDI controller, people will think that a Synth1 sound is awesome A6 sound.

When I finally, after years and years, got to play a minimoog model D in a guitar center my reaction was ... "hmm." I had lusted after it for so long, and while the tone was indeed punchy I can't say it was really all that different from the hundreds of synth basses I've heard. My expectations were just so huge. It had a sort of profound reaction in my mind - I had to just get better at playing and writing stuff and screw the tone, for the time being.

I think I'll join you in saying I prefer VA's - cheaper, easy to maintain, more features (generally), patch storage, internal fx, midi, polyphony, multitimbral etc...

I've been blown away by the minimoog, prophet 5/10, andromeda, juno 6/60/106 (something about that synth!) and a few others - but, a lot of older, average, mid to low end analog just doesn't do it for me at all. Micromoog, prodigy, poly6, some SH's and others are really just budget synths that didn't and don't sound or feel so hot in my opinion - i'd rather spend my $700 on a VA, take it out for a really nice dinner and show (and have enough for a cab ride home in the morning).

yeah, I'd love a prophet 5 - no, i'm never going to pay the market price for one.

also, i think it's funny that people will froth at the mouth about how great an analog synth sounds... on an mp3 (or even a youtube video), recorded digitally, possibly processed through digital effects on low end monitors - is it analog anymore?! i think we need to understand that we listen to music digitally these days - and, generally, low quality digital.

mind you, I do understand the importance of an "instrument" - the build/feel, the connection that a player can have with it - older, analog synths do tend to have this - but, this is more an argument about the decline of quality manufacturing, late capitalism etc...

So true, in so many areas (in and out of music).

Nostalgia is hard to overcome. So is perception based on physical attributes (instead of musical ones). One of the best failures ever was by Bic (The pen and lighter company). They decided to make perfume. They hired top aroma specialists and made (supposedly) some good-smellin shiat. They put it in lil bottles somewhat similar to their lighters and tried to sell it for a reasonable price. It was of course a colossal failure. What they didn't realize is that chicks didn't care so much about the scent: They cared about the shape of the bottle and the name. And they didn't want "cheap", even if it smelled better than "expensive". They wanted their man (or themself) to spend good money on it.

Do you mean VAs? I'm an almost strictly hardware guy, so if you're asking if I use VSTi's, I don't. Otherwise, I'm confused.

ETA: Your avatar reminds me of my brief stint as a Satanist years ago. Also, as of that last post of yours, the post count was 1337. Because of these two things, I like you too.

VIs as in virtual instruments, so your response saddens me. Still looking for new toys and software is always cheaper. I like to pester people with similar interests =)

No VIs. Like I said, I'm a hardware guy. I find that, as a creative tool, a mouse just.. isn't. I need knobs, sliders, something more hands-on. Not that some VIs don't sound good (in fact, I hear that soft synths are slowly taking over)... it's just not my preferred way to create. I NEEDZ MAH KNOBS. Though, I guess midi controllers would suffice. I just like hardware, damnit.

Also, pester away! I'm always up for new frens.
