Excellent concept. I'll work on the synthesis based on differential equations.


(Actually, I bet modeling, particularly for acoustic instruments, requires some of the good ol' calculus...)

 

 

Actually you can do some cool synthesis with Mathematica software. I did some fiddling with Bessel functions once and it sounded pretty cool.

Sounded like a DX7 at all?

 

A buddy of mine told me 20 years ago that programming Yamaha FM was simple if you understood Bessel functions...just the sort of thing two geeky engineers babble about over a few beers :poke:

For Android smartphones there is an app called "Caustic" which lets you draw the waveforms for the synth.

So there you have synthesis based on geometry or free-form but symmetric 2D lines (linear algebra). Can get some nice PPG-like waveforms on the cheap this way... ;)
