"man i'm losing sound and sight

of all those who can tell me wrong from right

when all things beautiful and bright

sink in the night

yet there's still something in my heart

that can find a way

to make a start

to turn up the signal

wipe out the noise"

Peter Gabriel - Signal to noise

Had to post this for the Bungle fans.

There aint a thing I wouldn't do for you

'cause I'm potty trained like a great dane have a nice day...

Incubus in disguise Lord of the Flies

A pile of {censored} dressed up to appetize

I'm the main course Degredation a la mode

you accept my invitation 'cause I

KNOW HOW TO TREAT A LADY!!

I'm a fountain of love, like Christ!

So shower in the golden jewlery of my balls

Eagerly you suck it down like a pig in a toilet

in a vacuum in a tornado in a black hole.

Not the most subtle, but still great lyrics.

Another favorite of mine:

"And of all the stars above, only one reminds her of

leaving you again endlessly....."

-"Endlessly"

Mercury Rev.

And I could quote so many more from them. they are great.

I've noticed on this board that people write a lot of cheesy love songs, but it seemds that peoples favorite lyrics don't come from love songs....hmmm

"He used to surgery for girls in the 80's, but gravity always wins."

"The breath of the morning, I keep forgetting, the smell of the warm summer air. I live in a town, where you can't smell a thing, you watch your feet for cracks in the pavement."

Both Radiohead.

This is one of my many favourate lyrics, pretty topical now I guess:

Bob Dylan - With God on Our Side

Oh my name it is nothin'

My age it means less

The country I come from

Is called the Midwest

I's taught and brought up there

The laws to abide

And that land that I live in

Has God on its side.

Oh the history books tell it

They tell it so well

The cavalries charged

The Indians fell

The cavalries charged

The Indians died

Oh the country was young

With God on its side.

Oh the Spanish-American

War had its day

And the Civil War too

Was soon laid away

And the names of the heroes

I's made to memorize

With guns in their hands

And God on their side.

Oh the First World War, boys

It closed out its fate

The reason for fighting

I never got straight

But I learned to accept it

Accept it with pride

For you don't count the dead

When God's on your side.

When the Second World War

Came to an end

We forgave the Germans

And we were friends

Though they murdered six million

In the ovens they fried

The Germans now too

Have God on their side.

I've learned to hate Russians

All through my whole life

If another war starts

It's them we must fight

To hate them and fear them

To run and to hide

And accept it all bravely

With God on my side.

But now we got weapons

Of the chemical dust

If fire them we're forced to

Then fire them we must

One push of the button

And a shot the world wide

And you never ask questions

When God's on your side.

In a many dark hour

I've been thinkin' about this

That Jesus Christ

Was betrayed by a kiss

But I can't think for you

You'll have to decide

Whether Judas Iscariot

Had God on his side.

So now as I'm leavin'

I'm weary as Hell

The confusion I'm feelin'

Ain't no tongue can tell

The words fill my head

And fall to the floor

If God's on our side

He'll stop the next war.

Dire Straits "The Man's Too Strong":

"You may have got your silver,

but I swear upon my life,

your sister gave me diamonds,

...and I gave them to your wife"

Or all of "Brothers in Arms"

...and I'm not even a big D.S. fan.

I don't know about "smartest", but judging by most of the posts here it is far more poetic (especially in the context of the sparse song) and emotional than most on the previous pages.

----

It is complete now,

Two ends of time are neatly tied.

A one-way street,

She's walking to the end of the line.

There she'll meet,

The faces she keeps in her heart and mind.

They say,

"Goodbye!"

Tomorrow Wendy is going to die.

----

Tomorrow Wendy - Andy Prieboy.

Some folks on the forum have a very different idea of "good" or "clever" lyrics to myself. Fair enough! A simple bit of cursing or pimping doesn't impress me personally though.

When you hear this song, (Andy Prieboy's version - not so much the Concrete Blonde cover), you can tell he meant it when he wrote it.

AP isn't even one of my favourite artists but that song hits a chord - especially knowing the background to it.

I can totally agree with this.

I like a lot of lyrics by The Police. Even "De Doo Doo Doo De Dah Dah Dah!" has a somewhat reasonable point for the nonsensical chorus.

I'm not so sure I can forgive...

There's a house in my street

It looks real neat

I'm the chap who lives in it

And when the wombat comes

You will find me gone

To look for a place to sit

...even if the song is funny in its own bizarre fashion.

Let's not even mention "Sally" or "Mother".

"Well the telephone is ringing..."

:D

See ya tomorrow

or

Only suckers fall in love with perfect strangers"

From "Narcolepsy":

And there's a demon in my head who starts to play,

A nightmare tape loop of what went wrong yesterday,

And I hold my breath 'till it's more than I can take,

And I close my eyes I dream that I'm awake,

And there's a bone in my hand that connects to a drink,

In a crowded room where the glasses clink,

And I'll buy you a beer and we'll drink it deep,

Because that keeps me from falling asleep

Facet Squared by Fugazi off of "In on the killer take"

Pride no longer has definition

Everybody wears it and it always fits

A state invoked for the lack of position

Strength is the bait that keeps us so busy

If its perforated, then i tear it to bits

All sense was lost in the frenzy

They should never

touch

the

ground

Irony is the refuge of the educated

Always complaining but they never quit

cool's eternal, but its always dated

They should never

touch

the

ground

My faves (I just can't choose one!):

"Standing on the Edge of Summer" - Thursday

In this room, I'm sitting by your side

Cause it rains for hours and the phone is off its hook

Standing on the edge, casting lots to set me up

Before you knock me down

Off the summer's edge and drown me

We're betting on our own lives

Making up for all the time we lost

In this house of cards we're all holding hearts and spades

(One breath, one step, could knock it all down)

But you lead with your eyes and you give it away

(Decide, Design, to cut from the clouds)

When the people you love get lost in the shuffle

(When you leave, you leave nothing but broken hearts)

You let it go and then you fold

So we stay on the open road

We drive for hours and still no end in sight at all

Driving in your car

Miss the stop sign fall in love

Just to get knocked down

Off the summer's edge and drown me

We're betting on our own lives

Making up for all the time we lost

In this house of cards we're all holding hearts and spades

(One breath, one step, could knock it all down)

But you lead with your eyes and you give it away

(Decide, Design, to cut from the clouds)

When the people you love get lost in the shuffle

(When you leave, you leave nothing but broken hearts)

Pull with your punches and burn with your cigarettes

Pulled like a punch, burnt like a cigarette...forever

"A Hole in The World" by Thursday is also great too

In this blackout inertia will hold our thoughts

And the exit sign offers no light to see by

Can we cast our shadows alone in the dark

I can't see without you

When the world is crashing down

Part with it, start again

When the world is crashing down

These notes will fold themselves

Standing at the margins end

to see where the daybreak ends

You can find compassion here

but the page turns too fast

We fell in this hole that opened up

givin up on hope, living without love

And we still type black lines

When the world is crashing down

These notes will fold themselves

Adjust the aperture to focus on the negative

Like phosohors in the darkroom ignite'

Like dodging faces in the corner of the print

Frame by frame this hole is opening up and we fall in

There's no such thing as whole

There is a hole in the world

Yep.

+1...

I'm not just someone looking for pumpkins lyrics to agree on, but I do think that "love is suicide", simple as that, is a bold statement. you're taking a huge risk with love, and I think it's a nice lyric...especially at the emotional standard that corgan sings it at. :)

To live outside the law you must be honest

I know you always say that you agree

But where are you tonight sweet Marie?

(Bob Dylan)

Elimentary penguin

climbing up the Eiffel tower

man you should have seen them kicking Edger Allen Poe

(John Lennon)

And if I've ever seen you

I didn't catch your name

Sing it loud so I may hear you.

Make it easy to be near you

For the things you do endear you to me

oh, you know I will.

(Paul; McCartney)

Groping with a stoker from the coast of Guada-lupe-ayyyyyy!!!

(Marriot/Lane - Small Faces)

What you gonna do about it that's what I want to know.

it makes me feel so good to always tell you when youre wrong

the big man that i am to always have to put you down

it makes me look so good to always put you in your place

i can write it in a song but never say it to your face

-pedro the lion "criticism as inspiration"

Glance, don't stare

Soon you're being told to recognize your heirs

No, not me -- I'm an island of such great complexity

Stress surrounds in the muddy peaceful center of this town

Tell me off in the hotel lobby right in front of all the bellboys and the over-friendly concierge

-Pavement "Shady Lane"

i always thought i was such a nerd i refused to touch that strange bean curd
