Alternatives to Powerpoint? Are there any free shareware programs?

I will be teaching 8th grade this year. I would like to be able to utilize a program like powerpoint in the class, but simply don't have to funds to buy powerpoint.

 

I would like to be able to create pages, and add audio/video clips to the presentation.

 

Any ideas? Any links or tips would be greatly appreciated.

I think openoffice has a powerpoint alternative.

 

I only use the open office wordprocessor, so I'm not sure, but I think it does

when you use the open office writer, the default format is .odt

so you'll probably want to change it to .doc or whatever ms word uses

Yes. Some things like many of the effects won't work though but generally the content is opened just fine.
