Thanks Scott! But could you give me a little more information as to why you thought it was terrible? All these people who don't like the lyrics aren't going to help me at all unless they let me know why they don't like them! Also I find it kind of odd and 'assholish' of you (if you will :) ) that you would automatically jump to the conclusion that the music is terrible as well without even hearing it. Could you please tell me why you think this is so? And if it's so terrible, give me some helpful pointers in an attempt to make the music fit your standards. Are you trying to say that I am a bad musician/guitarist without even first hearing my music? Also I don't think music has to invoke some kind of human emotion to make it good. Limp Bizkit's 'Nookie' for example, instantly makes me wish I was getting my 'sex' on with three slutty, young latino college girls when I hear it...............does that make it a good song?? I'm also not saying that invoking some human emotion (as you so cleverly put it) makes music bad either; I'm just saying it doesn't necessarily make the music any better. In your next post why don't you try to actually help out and better the song in some way. And as for your pedalboards, they look pretty sweet. How many pedals will th Mini Roadtripper fit? Do they come powered? Please e-mail me with the info, I might be interested in purchasing one.

Scott, would you also let me know what kind of music you like to listen to. Who is your favorite band, guitarist, etc.? If are musical tastes aren't somewhat similar, I probably won't value your opinion at all.

To be honest with you I don't have all the music worked out yet. Once I get it recorded I'll post a link to the song though. Actually if you have any suggestions as to how I should have the music sound or anything like that let me know. It would help out. :)

Bee Thousand is as good as any - and a lot of people consider it their best.

Just take MMouse for example. Did you TOTALLY get off on the first listen?

You might have suffered from the "hype" on Bee Thousand. Give it another try!!!

And catch them live at a club near you.

Some songs on Bee that are more "instant" classics

Kicker Of Elves

Goldheart Mountaintop Queen Directory

Hot Freaks

I am a Scientist

Echoes Myron

Awful Bliss

Scenes From Esther's Day

electricmel........you were right! It took me two more listens to really start liking Bee Thousand and now I'm hooked! I've been listening to it at four A.M. every morning before I go to bed for the last week. Its awesome. My favorites are definitely Echoes Myron, I am a Scientist, Smothered In Hugs, Awful Bliss and Goldheart Mountaintop Queen Directory. I just love Robert Pollard's voice when he sings those songs. I especially like the vocals in Awful Bliss when he's backing up his voice. What other cd's should I get? I heard Under The Bushes Under The Stars is good, also Alien Lanes. What do you recommend? This is starting to become one of my more favorite cd's. Good stuff!

Finally!!!

I'd hoped you'd get it!

Bee Thousand is amazing, but don't put too much stock in people who say it's the best - EVERYTHING rocks!! Lo-Fi and Hi-Fi stuff.

Mag Earwhig is one that doesn't get much props nowadays but it is a sure bet for the next one.

I would say Under The Bushes before Alien Lanes because it is a touch less raw, but you'll want both pretty soon.

The newest one is killer too. It just came out. Universal Truths and Cycles.

Also keep on your list all the Bob Pollard solo albums, Isolation Drills, Propeller and the Original Box set with the first 5 records.

Check out www.gbv.com on how to get the old ones and it's a great site, too.

Have fun! Maybe I'll see you at a show one day!!!

Wait I forgot to mention my favorite or second favorite by them. Tractor Rape Chain. I love it! I like it when he's like "better yet, lets all get wet! on the tractor rape chain". Those are some cool lyrics.

How about the words to "I am a Scientist"

"I am a lost soul, I shoot myself with Rock and Roll.
The hole I dig is bottomless and nothing else can set me free..."

Doesn't "Goldheart..." make you weep like a little thumb-sucker???:D

They're touring now-Where are you from?

Yeah I know what you mean. That is my favorite part when he's like 'I shoot myself with rock n' roll' and when he says 'i am a pharmacist, prescriptions i fill them'. Yes Goldheart Mountaintop does make me weep (ha almost). Right when he's like 'I run through the night as if nobodies there...'. That part is so awesome. I doubt they'll be coming around here anytime soon. I live in Greenville, Mississippi right now (but am certainly not from here!). Don't get too many concerts around here. I wish I still lived in Texas. I could of seen concerts all the time (I wasn't too big into music back then though). But Guided By Voices is awesome. Do you know of any other good bands that I don't? Let me know, I need some new music!

those were some pretty cool lyrics dude, I didn't really pay attention to theme or anything liek that because, while it has its place, i dont really think music is gonna change the world or anything, so i like weird, cool lyrics like that. good job.
a good band i think you should check out is The Catherine Wheel, theyre a British band that was pretty popualr on college radio, good stuff, check out there songs Black Metallic and Phantom of the American Mother (if you haven already) im not sure if thats exactly what kind of music youre looking into, but its good stuff. also, you should check out the canadian band The Tragically Hip for REALLY good lyrics (with good music).

I agree. Modest mouse is hella awesome!

i also liked your lyrics. it has a nice personality to it, but i think you should take out the part that says "Me feels so blue"
beacause the word "blue" is just so cliched and corny. Everything else looks good.

Thanks you guys. I'll check out Catherine Wheel tonight! umps I was trying to make the whole song sound sort of cliche/corny but I might have to adjust some of the lyrics anyways. What does everyone else think about that.

Electricmel - I also forgot to mention really my favorite part in a GBV song. I don't know I might be the only person that likes it a lot. But in 'Echoes Myron' about one minute 45 seconds through the song he's like 'And we made it.......and {censored} yeah it's cool'. I just love that part I don't know why. It just sounds sounds so 'catchy' and awesome. Anyways..........I checked out The New Pornographer's and I've been listening to Letters From An Occupant nonstop. I love it when there's another voice that comes in and sings the chorus. I don't know if it's my kind of music though. I downloaded a few other songs and I wasn't quite as impressed. I might sound like a complete pig right now, but for the most part I don't 'dig' girl singers. I kind of like Cat Power but that's about it. But I definitely like that song.

Here's a funny story. I used to work at a strip club in ATL. It would get me into a lot of places I can no longer get into, like backstage at shows. Well at a GBV show I went backstage, hung with the guys all night drinking beer. It seemed Bob was dogging this chick and nobody knew who it was. It turned out to be Chan Marshall (a.k.a. Cat Power) and I ended up partying all night with Bob, Chan, and her friend who was pretty homely but I wanted to hang. This was about 3 years ago before I had my band doing anything so I didn't get the chance to "push".

Anyway - one keerazy night. And Moon Pix chills my bones. I saw her play once and it was pretty poor. She is very shy on stage and mumbles most of her songs with her hair in front of her face, strumming an old Sears guitar. I knew the head bartender at the club and he said they had to threaten her just to get out and play.

That's a great line from Echoes Myron and I guarantee your not the only one who digs it.

Mine is the beginning line right as the song takes off..." Tower to the skies, an academy of lies..." But there are SO many.

The New Pornographers to poppy maybe? I agree but I like their style Cheap Trick, Psychadelic rock, Go-Go's, Kinks-ish...

I just got the new Shins record and it's cool. They sound a touch like Modest Mouse and actually thank them in their liner notes. It's alot like old Pink Floyd-Syd Barret. It's weird, I was in a musical slump for a while only cured by heavy doses of GBV, but now I'm kind of excited again...

Here's some GBV and Bowie recs.

Bowie - Ziggy Stardust, Hunk Dory
Guided By Voices - Bee Thousand, Mag Earwhig, Under The Bushes, Under The Stars
