Members Kaz2550
I find that I'm more interested in amps than guitars so I want to start learning about how they work, learn how to modify amps, and eventually build one myself. Can someone recommend me a good book to read? I've heard about The Ultimate Tone Vol 3 by Kevin O'Connor, has anyone read it? cheers:wave:
Members Weathered
I haven't read the O'Connor books, but by all accounts, they are supposed to be the best to learn what's going on in a guitar amp circuit. A good primer book is the Dave Hunter tube amp book - it's not nearly as technical as the KoC stuff, but it does really give you a good base to work off of. Members Weathered
Amazon is taking over a month to get me my Dave Hunter book. They sent it next day for me, and then they wouldn't leave it at my condo, so it took me another 4 days to pick the damn thing up at the local UPS office. Members RupertB
I've read TUT vol. I. While it is very good, I don't think its the best choice for an introduction to tube amps. Get it, but not first. Dave Funk's Tube Amp Workbook & Electric Guitar Amplifier Handbook by Jack Darr (try to find the 3rd edition) would both be good choices. IMO, the best "first book" for those interested in learning about amps is a "Basic Electronic Circuits" textbook. You can pick one up for $10 or less at a used book store. That is how I started. Alternately: http://www.owlnet.rice.edu/~elec201/Book/basic_elec.html There is a ton of good info available for free on-line: Check out the Tech Info pages at http://www.aikenamps.com/ Impedance calculator, power filter model, etc. http://www.duncanamps.com/ Theory & construction guitdes on the P1 page at http://www.ax84.com/ AX84 has great projects for learning about amps.
